GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department extinguished a fire Friday evening that severely damaged one unit in a small apartment building.
At 8:40 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, Gloucester firefighters responded to 6 Prospect Street and found a blaze in the first floor apartment of the 8-unit building.
The working fire was quickly knocked down by the first arriving companies out of Gloucester Fire Department Headquarters and the incident was handled by a full first alarm assignment comprised of three Engines, one Ladder, one Rescue, a Shift Commander, and a Beauport ambulance.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

While the fire damage was kept to one unit, all eight apartments in the building were evacuated after the power was cut due to potential damage to the electrical service line.
A Gloucester Fire Department engine along with a Rockport Fire Department engine provided station coverage during the fire.
“Gloucester firefighters were able to quickly contain this blaze to the first floor unit, preventing further damage to the building,” said Chef Eric Smith. “The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Gloucester Fire Department, Gloucester Police Department, and the Fire Investigation Unit of the Massachusetts Fire Marshal’s office.”
