GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department responded to and extinguished a 2-alarm house fire on Thursday. On Thursday, Jan. 4, at approximately 12:52 p.m. Gloucester Fire received reports from Gloucester Police of smoke coming from a home on Holly Street. Upon arrival crews observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the home.
Gloucester Fire began an aggressive attack and ultimately struck a second alarm as the fire spread to other floors.
The sole occupant of the home evacuated before firefighters arrived. There were no reports of injuries.
The fire was knocked down at approximately 1:50 p.m.
Mutual aid was provided by Beauport Ambulance, Essex Fire Department, Ipswich Fire Department Ladder Truck, off-duty Gloucester Fire members who staffed Rescue 3, Engine 5 and 6, with additional mutual aid coverage from Danvers Fire and Wenham Fire. The home was deemed uninhabitable by Inspectional Services. The single occupant of the home is being assisted by her family.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Gloucester Fire Department and the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
