Friday News Update – Drug Arrest in Ipswich Thursday – Chimney Fire in Gloucester on Woodman Street – Click for Details

IPSWICH / GLOUCESTER

— Chief Paul Nikas reports that the Ipswich Police Department arrested a man for drug trafficking and possession yesterday.

MICHAEL JOSEPH MEEHAN, AGE 20, OF LOWELL is charged with:

• Trafficking Heroin

• Possession of a Class B Substance (Crack Cocaine)

• Possession of a Class C Substance (Clonazepam)

• Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class D Substance

• Trespassing

On Thursday, March 9 at approximately 10:20 p.m., Ipswich Police were dispatched to 1 Agawam Village for a report of two people trying to drag a third person into a car.

Upon arrival, police were met by a woman, who stated that she was driving by and saw a man on the ground. It appeared that the man had overdosed, and he was transported to a local hospital via ambulance.

The woman told police that she was in the area visiting a friend, identified as MEEHAN, who was at an apartment in Southern Manor, which is part of Agawam Village.

MEEHAN, who is known to police, was served a no trespassing order by the Ipswich Housing Authority in October 2015, which forbids him from being on any land owned by the Ipswich Housing Authority, including Southern Manor.

After an initial investigation, police located MEEHAN inside an apartment at Southern Manor. MEEHAN was placed under arrest for trespassing and was transported to the Ipswich Police Station for booking.

During the booking process, police conducted an inventory of MEEHAN’S personal property and located drugs, including more than 18 grams of heroin, as well as drug paraphernalia.

“This is another great example of Ipswich Police officers utilizing their training and experience to recognize that something wasn’t right,” Chief Nikas said. “I am proud of the responding officers for executing the proper follow up in this situation, which ultimately led to a major drug arrest.”

MEEHAN is scheduled to appear in Newburyport District Court on March 16 for a dangerousness hearing.

Gloucester Fire Department Battles Chimney Fire

GLOUCESTER — Fire Chief Eric Smith reports that the Gloucester Fire Department successfully extinguished a chimney fire on Thursday evening, sparing a home from significant damage.

Firefighters responded to 67 Woodman St. at 6:15 p.m. for a reported building fire. Upon arrival, firefighters could see sparks and embers falling from the chimney of a 1 1/2 story house. The homeowner told firefighters that, while loading his wood stove, he heard noise from the chimney and began to see smoke coming from the stove.

Crews used a dry chemical fire extinguisher at the bottom of the chimney, removed the wood stove insert, and inspected the chimney, taking note of creosote and buildup inside the chimney. Firefighters used water to extinguish the fire on the top of the chimney and then wet down the exterior of the house.

The homeowner was advised to have his chimney inspected and professionally cleaned. The family was able to return home Thursday evening, and crews cleared the scene at 7:50 p.m.

Chief Smith notes that with the large fluctuation in temperatures this winter, wood stoves and fireplaces might be getting sporadic or infrequent use. Before using a wood/pellet stove or fireplace, the Gloucester Fire Department always advises homeowners to have their chimneys inspected and cleaned to prevent possible fires.
