The majority of Gloucester Public Schools students are protected against measles—are you? 🤔 Stay in step with your peers and keep yourself and your community safe. Measles spreads fast, but you can stop it in its tracks. 💪✅Be smart. Be protected. #GloucesterHealthDepartment
Measles is a highly contagious virus that starts with cold-like symptoms—fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes—followed by a red, blotchy rash. 🤧As of February 27, 2025, a total of 164 measles cases were reported in the US! (https://www.cdc.gov/measles/data-research/index.html)
🔴 Is it dangerous? Yes. It can cause pneumonia, deafness, brain swelling, and, in rare cases, death. Young children, pregnant women, and those with weak immune systems are most at risk.
🔴 How does it spread? Through coughs, sneezes, and shared items. The virus stays in the air for up to 2 hours! 😷
🔴 Who’s at risk? Unvaccinated people, babies under 1, and some adults vaccinated before 1968.
🔬 Diagnosis? A test using a nose/throat swab and blood sample.
