Essex County D.A. Report: One Person Killed in Multi-Car Crash on Route 95 in Topsfield

Report from Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker: One person was killed and another flown by medical helicopter for treatment after a multi-car crash on I-95 in Topsfield Friday afternoon, 

Three vehicles traveling southbound on I-95 near Exit 70 were involved in a chain-reaction collision about 4:20 p.m.

The first vehicle ended up in the breakdown lane. The second vehicle collided with a third vehicle traveling behind it.

The third vehicle rolled into the median, ejecting two passengers. One ended up in the northbound lane, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. The second passenger was flown to a Boston hospital for treatment.

Two other passengers remained in the third vehicle and were transported locally for further treatment.

Two occupants of the first vehicle fled authorities on foot in nearby woods but members of the Massachusetts State Police were able to detain one of them. Units on foot, with K9s and with the State Police Air Wing were continuing a search for the second occupant as of Friday evening.

The crash is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, other elements of the State Police and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office State Police Detective Unit.
