Endicott College: Women’s Lacrosse Outlasts Western New England On Senior Day, 15-9

BEVERLY, Mass. — The Endicott women’s lacrosse team knocked off Western New England, 15-9, in Conference of New England (CNE) action at Hempstead Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the contest, Caroline Carlson (Hebron, Conn.), Gilly Hartt (Old Saybrook, Conn.), Katie Jones (Franklin, Mass.), Bailey Sheehan (Pomfret, Conn.), Lily Troupe (Newburyport), and Emily Typrowicz (Palos Verdes, Calif.) were all honored for their contributions to the program and Endicott College community.

Leah Black (Cheshire, Conn.) led the way for the Gulls with four goals and an assist, while Sheehan added three tallies and an assist.

Abbie Belleville (Salem, Conn.)Mia Samarjian (Stow), and Mia Smith (Portsmouth, N.H.) all scored twice. Grace McAfee (Marmora, N.J.) and Clare Wendell (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) both found the back of the net once.

Payton Quirk (Nahant) made five saves for her eighth victory of the season. The Gulls as a team caused 17 of Western New England’s 24 turnovers, with Tori Apostolakes (Chelmsford) leading the way with three herself, while Ava Amara (Southbury, Conn.), McAfee, Samarjian, and Smith all recorded two.

After a tightly contested first quarter with Endicott leading 4-3, the Gulls scored the first four goals of the second quarter to take an 8-3 lead at the 3:22 mark. Smith got the scoring started just over two minutes into the quarter as Black tallied the next three goals (11:21, 10:33, and 3:22) as the Gulls’ defense held the Golden Bears’ offense to just five shots throughout the quarter. Western New England would eventually find the back of the net before halftime to cut the lead to 8-4 heading to the break.

Coming out of halftime, Western New England scored the first goal of the third quarter but Endicott responded with a 3-0 scoring run to open up its biggest lead of the game at that point at 11-5. The Golden Bears never gave up scoring the next three unanswered to end the third quarter and cut the Gulls lead to three going to the fourth quarter.

Black put an end to WNE’s scoring run just 92 seconds into the final quarter to regain a four-goal advantage for Endicott. The two teams then went scoreless over the next nine minutes before the Golden Bears scored with over four minutes to play and cut the lead back down to three. The Gulls ended the game on another 3-0 scoring run as McAfee, Samarjian, and Smith all scored to secure the home victory, 15-9.

Endicott (8-3, 4-0 CNE) visits Roger Williams on Wednesday, April 9 at 7 PM in a rematch of last season’s conference championship game. Western New England (3-8, 2-2 CNE) hosts Wentworth on Wednesday at 4 PM.
