Endicott College Weekend Sports News: Football Falls To Hobart 42-20 – Seven More Team Updates

BEVERLY – (Video) (Endicott Football) Hobart College, who is receiving votes in the D3football.com national top-25 poll, outscored Endicott 21-8 in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Gulls for a final score of 42-20 on Saturday afternoon at Hempstead Stadium.

Trailing 28-12 under the 10-minute mark of the fourth quarter, Endicott senior outside linebacker Connor McLaughlin (Canton, Mass.) shifted momentum in the contest when he intercepted a Shane Sweeney (Phelps, N.Y.) pass at his own 20-yard-line and took it to the house for an 80-yard score to bring the Gulls within eight points (28-20).

Endicott’s momentum swing didn’t last long, however, as Sweeney connected with senior wideout Sean Cunningham (Geneva, N.Y.) for a 68-yard touchdown pass at 7:34 of the quarter and the Statesmen never looked back.

ENDICOTT OFFENSE/DEFENSE

  • Junior fullback Lavante Wiggins (Pittsfield, Mass.) gave Endicott its first lead of the 2016 season withgull a one-yard TD run at 4:20 of the first quarter. Wiggins finished the contest with 100 yards rushing on 18 attempts and one touchdown (long 30, average 5.6).
  • Wiggins has now rushed for 100 yards or more twice in his career (132 vs. Maine Maritime on 10/4/14).
  • Michael Scherer (Middlefield, Conn.) led the quarterback trio of Sam Ouellette (Rochester, N.H.) and Joe Kalosky (Plymouth, Conn.) with 122 yards passing on nine completions (22 attempts).
  • Conor Crotty (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) paced the Gulls receiver corps with 72 yards on five catches.
  • Chris Lipscomb (West Springfield, Mass.) hauled in the only other score for Endicott with a 21-yard fade in the left corner of the left end zone at 4:27 of the third to make it a 14-12 game, at the time.
  • Defensively, William Rivera (Orangeburg, N.Y.) notched 10 tackles (eight solo), while Allen Gibson (Seymour, Conn.) collected nine tackles (three solo) and one interception at the doorstep of the end zone with less than 34-seconds remaining in the first half (7-6 Hobart lead).
  • Meanwhile, McLaughlin wrapped up the second game of his senior season with an 80-yard interception for a touchdown, three tackles – including one for a loss – and one quarterback hurry.
  • The Gulls as a defensive unit tallied seven quarterback hurries, which included two from senior co-captain Craig Anderson (Franklin, Mass.). Anderson finished the game with five tackles (three solo) in total.

HOBART OFFENSE/DEFENSE

  • Sweeney, who is the reigning Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week, shined once again for Hobart going 22-for-45 for 364 yards and four touchdowns. Last week against Brockport, Sweeney went 31-for-45 for a career-high 420 yards and four TD passes.
  • Senior Bradley Burns (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) carried the ball 13 times for 79 yards and one score.
  • Four different student-athletes hauled in touchdowns for the Statesmen including Brandon Shed (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Isaiah Hill (Trenton, N.J.), Matthew Woods (Latham, N.Y.), and Cunningham.
  • Shed led the quartet with seven catches for 135 yards.
  • As an offensive unit, Hobart amassed 504 total yards – including 364 through the air and 140 on the ground.
  • AJ McFarlane (Surrey, British Columbia) guided the frontline of the defense for the Statesmen with 10 tackles (three solo, seven assists, two sacks, 2.5 tackles for a loss, one forced fumble).
  • Matt Cragg (Corry, Pa.) was second on the team in tackles with seven, while Jedh Downey (Norwood, N.J.) had five tackles and two forced fumbles.
  • Tom D’Antonio (Greenwich, Conn.) also registered two tackles and one interception.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Hobart is now 2-0 overall to start a season for the seventh straight year.
  • The Statesmen are 496-466-44, all-time, since their program started in 1891.

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Endicott men’s soccer team handed host UMass-Dartmouth its first loss of the season, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field  as junior midfielder Robert Hartan (Hebron, Conn.) scored his first career game-winning goal (unassisted) in the 82nd minute to clinch the win for the Gulls.

Freshman forward Evan Couchot (Mason, Ohio) knocked a header into the upper left corner of the net for the first goal of the match in the 33rd minute on an assist from senior midfielder Paul Erne (San Diego, Calif.) as the Gulls took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Junior midfielder Fabio Araujo (Brockton, Mass.) knotted the score at one apiece with the equalizer in the 57th minute on a feed from senior forward Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Today’s match saw the Gulls win their fourth straight match against UMass-Dartmouth, though the Corsairs still hold the all-time series lead dating back prior to the 2001 season, 9-4-1.
  • Endicott is on a three-match winning streak.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

QUINCY, Mass.- The Endicott offense stayed hot on Saturday, scoring six more goals as they took down Eastern Nazarene 6-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both squads. With the win, Endicott moves to 3-0-1 (1-0-0 CCC) on the season while Eastern Nazarene falls to 0-4-0 (0-1-0 CCC).

The Gulls jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the half following goals from four different players while the defensive unit provided a stifling performance, holding the Lions without a shot in the frame. The scoring got underway in the 19th minute when freshman Hannah Pesci (Windham, N.H.) scored her first career goal at the 18:12 mark as she jumped on a loose ball in the box and put it in the back of the net. Less than six minutes later, junior Rachel Hanna (Chelmsford, Mass.) headed a cross from Paige Pratt (Topsfield, Mass.) past the Lions’ keeper to give Endicott the 2-0 advantage.

Freshman Catherine Elkas (Holden, Mass.) would be involved on the next two goals, scoring in the 29th minute as she received an endline cross from Abigail Silverstein (Katonah, N.Y.) and one timed to give Endicott the 3-0 lead. Just under two minutes later, Elkas would cross to Sharlotte Pernice (West Springfield, Mass.) in the box Pernice would bury her shot to swell the lead to 4-0 heading into the break. Pernice wasn’t done there as she scored her second of the match in the 53rd minute on a left-footed shot in the box before Paige Pratt wrapped up the scoring, potting her first of the season in the 77th minute off a direct kick to give Endicott the 6-0 win.

BEYOND THE BOX

  • Pernice, the reigning CCC Offensive Player of the Week, has now tallied eight points on the season by scoring three goals and assisting on two others. Pernice is tied for third in the CCC in points.
  • Pratt’s goal and assist were both the first of her career. The junior defender has played in 19 career matches and has started all four this season.
  • Elkas, a freshman, has now recorded points in her last three matches. This marked her first career match with both a goal and an assist as she now has six points on the season.
  • Hanna’s goal now ties her with Pernice for the team lead with three goals after she scored two in the team’s 4-0 win over Salem St.
  • Pesci’s goal, the first of her career, also proved to be the eventual game winner.
  • Goalies Caroline Armbruster (Stowe, Vt.) and Kristin Hartlage (Niskayuna, N.Y.) combined for the shutout as Hartlage made the only save of the match. 
  • Endicott out-shot Eastern Nazarene 31-1 in the match, as the visitors also held a 10-3 advantage in corners. The Gulls are now 16-1-1 all-time against the Lions.

FOR THE FOES

  • The Lions saw keepers Anastasia Swift (Morrisville, Vt.) and Griselda Minchaca (Whittier, Calif.) combine to make three saves in the setback.
  • Senior Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) recorded the lone shot for the Lions.

BABSON PARK, Mass.The Endicott field hockey team fell, 6-1 to host No. 16 Babson College Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at MacDowell Field.

Babson took a 2-0 lead into halftime behind goals from junior forward/midfielder Jacki Merrigan (Canton, Mass.) and senior midfielder Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) in the 10th and 21st minutes, respectively.

Junior midfielder Samantha Crowley (Leicester, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Gulls  on a feed from sophomore midfielder Meghan Stanton (Newburyport, Mass.) in the 54th minute to bring the score to 3-1 at the time.

The Beavers tacked on three more unassisted tallies, including two from junior forward Elise Towers (Cicero, N.Y.) down the stretch to keep Babson’s record unblemished.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Beavers are now 7-2 all-time against Endicott.
  • The Gulls have dropped seven straight to the Beavers in head-to-head matchups dating back to 2010.
  • Endicott is 2-5 on the road at Babson in the all-time series.

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott women’s tennis team fell to Colby College by a 5-3 score on Saturday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts. Today’s match marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Colby jumped out to a 2-1 advantage in doubles, before winning three straight singles matches (No. 3, No. 1, No. 2) to earn its first victory of the 2016-17 season. Endicott (2-2, 2-0 CCC) received victories at No. 2 doubles from sophomores Hayley Barnett (Marlboro, N.J.) and Margot Andreasen (Portland, Maine), and at No. 4 and No. 6 singles via sophomore Lauren Rahr (Waterford, Conn.) and senior Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.), respectively.

“Today’s match was a really hard fought battle against a quality NESCAC opponent,” said Endicott women’s tennis head coach Jeremy Howard. “I’m happy with where the team is four matches into the season, so now we will use the remainder of the weekend to relax before taking on Nichols next Wednesday.”

  • Rhodes’s gritty 1-6, 6-2, 11-9 triumph over Colby’s Emily Dyckman (Princeton, N.J.) was the 27th of her career.
  • Sophomore Gillian Freter (Scituate, Mass.) was well on her way to winning her third singles match of the season at the No. 5 position, but her match went unfinished due to rain. Freter held a 7-6 (7-3), 4-2 lead before play was halted for good.

CAMBRIDGe – After putting up good fights against two quality teams on Friday night but coming up just short, the Endicott women’s volleyball team rebounded well, claiming 3-1 victories over both Babson and Brandeis to move to 6-3 on the year.
With the 2-2 record, the Gulls finished seventh in the 12 team tournament after tie breakers (record in sets played of 8-8) broke up the the four-way tie for fifth place. Endicott will travel to Simmons on Wednesday before traveling to New London, Conn. to take on Coast Guard and Connecticut College.
MATCH ONE: Endicott 3 Babson 1 (25-12, 25-22, 25-27, 25-23)
 
Endicott pounced on Babson early, hitting .391 in the first set that saw the Gulls get out to an 18-4 lead before finally taking the set 25-12. The second saw a much closer affair as Endicott’s offense cooled off a bit but the Gulls still pulled out a 25-22 set to climb ahead 2-0. Babson would charge back in the third, taking the set by a 27-25 score despite 13 Endicott kills before Endicott would edge out the fourth and final set, 25-23 to take the 3-1 win. Endicott is now 6-14 against Babson all-time as the Gulls have won the last two meetings.
BEYOND THE BOX
  • The Gulls once again saw junior Lauren Sheehan (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) lead the team as she hit a team-best .400 and recorded a team-high 14 kills in the win. 
  • Joining Sheehan with double-digit kills was outside Tori McIntyre (San Diego, Wash.) who picked up a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. It was the senior’s second double-double of the young season as she went for 15 kills and 10 digs against Bates on Friday.
  • Sophomore Emma Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.) chipped in nine kills as she hit at a .308 clip (9-1-26) while also playing solid defense, grabbing 10 digs.
  • Freshman libero Mackenzie Kennedy (Andover, Mass.) picked up a team-best and career-best tying 18 digs in the win to go with three aces.
  • Setters Mareena Clotfelter (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Zoey Gifford (Natick, Mass.) combined for 45 assists and 29 digs as they ran an efficient offense that hit .227 for the match.
MATCH TWO: Endicott 3 Brandeis 1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20)
 
The Gulls would get off to a sluggish start in the first set against Brandeis, hitting .000 as a team with just eight kills as they fell behind 1-0 after losing the set 25-17. Endicott would then pull away by claiming the second and third by scores of 25-19 and 25-17 to go ahead 2-1. The Gulls would then claim a tight fourth, 25-20, behind a great offensive effort that saw the team post 13 kills and a .333 hitting percentage to take the match 3-1. Endicott improved to 6-14 agains Brandeis all-time and has taken the last four consecutive matches.
 
BEYOND THE BOX
  • Sheehan continued her impressive start to the 2016 campaign by registering a team-high 12 kills while she hit at a .318 clip. The outside also picked up six digs and two assist blocks.
  • Clotfelter led the Gulls with 20 assists to go along with nine digs while Emma Jutras (Cranston, R.I.) collected a career-best 11 assists in the win.
  • Senior Tori McIntyre was outstanding defensively, picking up a team-high 19 digs to add to three assist blocks and two aces.
  • Sophomore Erica Hadad (Salem, N.H.) chipped in five kills and five assist blocks from the middle while fellow sophomore middle Emily DIezemann (Peabody, Mass.) chipped in four assist blocks.
  • Freshman libero Mackenzie Kennedy was solid again, serving up three aces and picking up 16 digs.

Endicott travels to Simmons on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. for a non-conference bout before traveling to New London, Conn. to take on Connecticut College and Coast Guard on Saturday.BIDDEFORD, Maine – Behind top-15 finishes from freshman Will Connelly (Barrington, R.I.) and junior James Dwyer (Berlin, Conn.), the Endicott men’s cross country team finished fourth overall at the University of New England (UNE) Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The host Nor’easters won the meet with 75 points, while Wentworth (79), and Plymouth State (89), ranked ahead of Endicott (104). Worcester State University rounded out the top-5 at today’s UNE Invitational with a team score of 118.

Connelly made his way through the 8-kilometer layout in 28:37 for a 10th place finish, while Dwyer crossed the line two-seconds later for 11th overall. The tandem averaged about 5:45 per mile in their first 8-kilomoter race of the young season.

Following Connelly and Dwyer to make up the rest of Endicott’s top-5 were sophomore Patrick Finocchiaro (Salem, N.H.) and freshman Adam Germaine (Guilford, Conn.) who checked in at No. 20 (29:16) and No. 21 (29:22), respectively, and sophomore Brendan Sasse (Westport, Mass.) who finished in 42nd place (30:41).

“The men fought hard through their first 8k this year and showed a lot of composure in the race strategy,” said Endicott men’s cross country head coach Spencer Lange. “Both Will and Adam are having strong starts to their careers. They are being pushed by James and Patrick who have been constantly improving since last season. The next few weeks are going to include some key workouts, they are motivated and excited to get continue their hard work.”

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Top-20 finishes from Abigail Keim (Williston, Vt.), Kiera Malone (Woburn, Mass.), and Laura Pomeroy (Windham, N.H.) propelled the Endicott women’s cross country team to a third place showing at the University of New England Invitational (UNE) on Saturday afternoon.

UNE claimed top honors with a team score of 19 points, while Worcester State University (87) earned runner-up honors ahead of Endicott (100). Last week, the Nor’easters recorded a perfect score of 15 points at their own UNE Early-Season Invitational against Maine Farmington and St. Joseph’s College.

Meanwhile, Keim led Endicott with an 11th place finish on the 5-kilometer course in 21:08, while Malone came in 13th overall (21:12), and Pomeroy was 19th overall (21:28). Maeve Kelly (Washingtonville, N.Y.) was the Gulls’ No. 4 runner with a time of 22:38, and Kelly O’Neill (Cumberland, R.I.) came through at 22:49 (41st).

UNE has a tough course but the ladies handled it well and are looking forward to the next few weeks of training before Bowdoin,” said Endicott women’s cross country head coach Spencer Lange. “Abby [Keim], Kiera [Malone], and Laura [Pomeroy] managed to find good positioning at the start of the race and moved their way up. Laura has done a great job so far running up there with Abby and Kiera. Both Maeve [Kelly] and Kelly [O’Neill] worked together through the latter part of the race to fight for their spots.
