Endicott College Sports Update: Baseball & Men’s Volleyball Win – Men’s Lacrosse Loses to Nationally Ranked Amherst

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott baseball team returned to North Field for the first time since before Spring Break and earned a 5-1 victory over visiting Worcester St. behind a complete-game, three-hitter from sophomore right-hander Owen Bautze (Sudbury, Mass.).

Bautze earned the win (1-1) on a complete-game, three-hitter (95 pitches), as he issued zero walks and had a game-high/career-high eight strikeouts.

Worcester St. junior RHP starter Zach Zona (Auburn, Mass.) suffered the loss (1-2) on 7 1/3 innings pitched, as he allowed five runs (all earned) on seven hits, one walk and seven punchouts.

The game was scoreless through the first three and half innings until freshman first baseman Chris Seidl (Dracut, Mass.) sent a ball sailing over the left field fence for his first career homer, plating senior right fielder Matthew Paola (Middlebury, Conn.) to give the hosts a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Endicott tacked on another run in the fifth as sophomore second baseman Michael DeDonato (Chelmsford, Mass.) doubled to right center to score senior shortstop Cody Hall (Rutland, Mass.).

Freshman first baseball George Bielizna (Danbury, Conn.) was hit by a pitch in the seventh and advanced to second on a passed ball before junior left fielder Jake Ryan’s (Northbride, Mass.) double to left center brought home Bielizna (unearned) for the Lancer’s lone run of the game.

The Gulls added two insurance runs in the eight as DeDonato hammered a solo shot to left center to lead off the inning and junior third baseman Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, Conn.) had an RBI single scoring freshman pinch runner Matt Bald (De Pere, Wisc.) for the host’s final run of the afternoon.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • DeDonato finished his night going 2-for-4 with two extra-base hits (two RBI) and one run scored out of the leadoff spot in the lineup as he leads the team with four multi-hit games this season.
  • DeDonato has three extra-base hits this season, including one double and two home runs.
  • Seidl extended his hitting streak to seven straight games, good for the longest on the team this season.
  • Hall had Endicott’s first hit of the game as he broke up a perfect game bid with one out in the bottom of the third.
  • Bautze retired 13 straight batters after allowing a single in the third inning and before he hit a batter in the top of the seventh inning.
  • Bautze’s complete-game was the second one of his career and his first of the season.
  • This was the second time this season that Endicott had two home runs in a game (March 13 vs. Franklin & Marshall.)

FOR THE FOES

  • Ryan went 1-for-4 in the No. 5 slot for the Lancers and had the team’s only extra-base hit (double) and one RBI.
  • Zona struck out seven before he was relieved by junior righty Neil Begley (Springfield, Mass.) in the eighth.
  • Begley gave up two hits in 2/3 innings pitched.
  • Senior third baseman John Boyd (Worcester, Mass.) had the first hit of the ball game in the top of the first inning.

Endicott (5-3) returns to action on Thursday, March 24 as the Gulls welcome Framingham St. to North Field for a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m. Worcester St. (6-6) travels to face UMass Boston on Thursday, March 24 at 6:00 p.m.

Men’s Volleyball

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott men’s volleyball team used a balanced effort on Tuesday night to sweep Lesley University, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-11), in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) matchup at MacDonald Gymnasium.

Ryan Sutherland (Fairport, N.Y.) and Dan Seaver (Milford, Mass.) paced Endicott’s attack with seven kills, apiece, while John Osborne (Freehold, N.J.) chipped in with six putaways to highlight the Gulls on offense. Troy Riorden (Fairport, N.Y.) also added five kills and six digs in the win.

Cameron Little (San Diego, Calif.) ran the offense for two sets and accumulated 21 assists, four service aces, and two digs, while Jack Vaccaro (South Kingstown, R.I.) collected 13 assists on 19 attempts in the final set of the match.

Ryan Healy (Fair Lawn, N.J.) guided the back row with seven digs and a .923 serve-receive percentage (12-for-13).

The Gulls never trailed in tonight’s victory as the match only featured four tied scores (Set 1 – 1 | Set 3 – 3). Endicott hit over .300 in every set, including a match-high .647 hitting percentage (12 K, 1 E, 17 TA) in set three. Defensively, the Gulls also held Lesley to a .071 hitting percentage (Set 1 – .000 | Set 2 – negative .056 | Set 3 – .118).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is now 2-0 this season against Lesley and 19-0 in the all-time series.
  • The Gulls have only dropped one set in the entire series versus Lesley.
  • Endicott is 5-2 at home this season.

FOR THE FOES

  • Tyler Burns (Newtown, Pa.) posted a team-high nine kills to go along with six digs and one service ace.
  • Karuna Chiemruom (Cranston, R.I.) facilitated the offense on 13 assists and three digs.
  • Jason Hulteen (Galena, Ohio) notched three kills.
  • C.Jay Sutton (Billerica, Mass.) tied Healy for the match-high in digs with seven total.

Men’s Lacrosse

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 5 nationally ranked Amherst by a 15-14 score on Tuesday night in non-conference action at Hempstead Stadium.

Will Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) guided Endicott’s attack with five goals and two assists, while Colin Bannon (Westport, Conn.) added two goals and two assists in the loss. Mitchell Tapley (Falmouth, Maine) also registered a multi-point game (2g, 1a) alongside teammates Peter Field Jr. (Hampstead, N.H.) and Hayden Souza (West Hartford, Conn.) who both tallied one goal and one assist, respectively.

Matthew Faucher (Western Springs, Ill.), Thomas Harvey (Huntington, N.Y.), and Shane Hughes (York Beach, Maine) rounded out the offense with solo markers.

Tied 7-7 nearly midway through the second quarter, Amherst orchestrated a 5-1 run to close out the half before holding on for the 15-14 win. Charlie Gill (Exeter, N.H.) started the run for Amherst at the 6:20 mark, while Kane Haffey (Duxbury, Mass.) potted a hat-trick, and Dylan Park (Charlottesville, Va.) capped the offensive outburst with one-second remaining to play in the stanza for the 12-8 advantage at the break.

Endicott went on to outscore Amherst 6-3 in the second half behind three goals from Jennings, but a man-up goal by Gill with 10:15 to play in the contest, which made the score 15-12 in favor of the visitors, was just enough despite the Gulls’ comeback efforts that featured tallies from Hughes (9:54) and Faucher (5:03) down the stretch.

Amherst goalie Cody Tranbarger (Louisville, Ky.) stopped 10 shots in the win (5-1). Cameron Bell (Falmouth, Maine) recorded a game-high 13 saves in the loss (2-6).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott won the matchup at the face-off X (21-for-31) and the ground ball battle (35-32).
  • The Gulls have won the face-off category against every opponent this season, and have only lost in the ground ball column versus one opponent this year.
  • Amherst owns a 9-2 record in the all-time series versus Endicott.
  • Tommy Hughes (Coram, N.Y.) went 21-for-31 at the face-off X and collected a team-high nine ground balls.

FOR THE FOES

  • Amherst is currently ranked No. 5 in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll.
  • Amherst controlled the possession battle, despite being outperformed at the face-off X (10-for-31), by going a perfect 18-for-18 on clear attempts.
  • Haffey led the team with four goals, while Chris Albanese (Westfield, N.J.), and Gill all had three goals to highlight the goal scorers for Amherst.
  • Albanese also added two assists in the win to lead Amherst in points with five.
  • Quinn Moroney (Manhasset, N.Y.) finished the night with four points (1g, 3a).

Endicott (2-6) hosts Gordon College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup next Wednesday at 4 p.m. Amherst (5-1) welcomes Hamilton to its campus this Saturday for a league contest at 1 p.m.
