Endicott College Saturday Sports Update: Men’s Basketball Wins An Overtime Thriller – Five Event Summaries

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY WINS

BEVERLY – Endicott freshman forward Ross Olsson (Billerica, Mass.) netted a pair of goals – including the game-winner – to lead the Gulls to a 5-3 comeback win over Nichols on Saturday evening at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.

Trailing 3-2 entering the third, Endicott’s Cam Bleck (Lake Forest, Ill.) evened the score at the 6:44 mark when he sniped a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle past Alex Larson’s (Madison, Ala.) glove into the upper left corner of the net.

Olsson followed with his first career game-winning goal 3:23 later when he beat Larson blocker side on assists by Joseph Slovak (South Yarmouth, Mass.) and Thomas Daniels (St. Louis, Mo.). John Carricato (Ridge, N.Y.) went on to lock up the victory with an empty net goal at 19:12 of the period.

Nichols produced a 2-0 lead midway through the first as Frank Butler (East Haven, Conn.) and Scott Cuthrell (Waterford, Mich.) scored at 11:42 and 14:10, respectively. Olsson and Bleck respond with a pair of late goals separated by just 22-seconds (18:34, 18:56) to end the first, before Butler regained the lead for the Bison at 3:10 of the second with his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Endicott freshman goaltender Kevin Aldridge (Beverly Hills, Mich.) finished with 32 saves to earn the win (10-6-2), while Larson stopped 23 shots in the loss (11-6-0).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott tied up the all-time series at 1-1 with today’s win. Nichols claimed a 3-2 (OT) victory over the Gulls in the first-ever meeting between the two programs back on November 4, 2015.
  • Aldridge now has 30 or more saves in nine games this season.
  • Daniels was credited with two assists giving him a team-high 10 on the season.
  • Petrella also registered a pair of assists in the victory. He currently ranks second on the team in assists with nine (tied with Olsson).
  • Daniels won a game-high 15 faceoffs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Butler currently ranks tied for third in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast with teammate Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.).

WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY FALLS

BEVERLY – Behind a 15-save performance from sophomore goaltender Sydney Belinskas (Port Orange, Fla.), Trinity College claimed a 3-0 win over Endicott on Saturday afternoon at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.

Delaney Harrop (Walpole, Mass.) gave the Bantams 1-0 lead at the 5:28 mark of the second with shot from the slot that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net for her second tally of the season. Shannon Farrell (Kennebunk, Maine) was credited with an assist on the goal for her faceoff win, which led to Harrop’s marker.

Trinity went on to make it 2-0 at 7:43 in the third on Emma Tani’s (Orange, Calif.) fourth goal of the season before Farrell recorded her second point of the day with a goal at 15:18.

Endicott freshman goaltender Vendella Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) finished with 30 saves on the afternoon in the loss (6-5-3). Jonsson has now made 30 or more saves in four straight games (five total).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Trinity is 2-0 in the all-time series against Endicott.
  • Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) won a team-high 10 faceoffs for the Gulls.
  • Endicott is now 3-3-2 at Raymond J. Bourque Arena this season.

  • Farrell led all student-athletes with 16 faceoff wins.

MEN’S BASKETBALL WINS OVERTIME THRILLER

QUINCY -  Junior guard Stephen Basden (Lynn, MA. – Governor’s Academy) and junior forward Daquan Sampson (Germantown, Md.) both notched double-doubles, but it wasn’t enough as the Endicott men’s basketball team fell, 80-78, in an overtime thriller Saturday afternoon inside the Lahue Physical Education Center to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe, Eastern Nazarene.

With the loss, the Gulls dropped to 10-7 overall, 7-3 in the CCC, while Eastern Nazarene improved to 12-5, and 6-4 in conference play on the season as both teams opened the second half of the conference schedule today.

In a game that would see four ties and four lead changes, Endicott battled early on to take a 7-5 lead on junior guard Max Motroni‘s (West Warwick, R.I.) layup with 18:30 on the clock.

The Gulls fired off 31 shots in the first half and made 18 of them (58.1 percent) compared to the Lions’ 12-of-29 (41.4 percent) from the field to head into halftime holding on to a 41-33 advantage at the break.

Endicott had its largest lead of the game, up by 12 (47-35) with 17:42 remaining in regulation on freshman guard Rob O’Brien‘s (Rindge, N.H.) layup. The tides soon turned in the second half when Eastern Nazarene clawed its way back with a 12-0 run to tie the game at 47-all at the 13:11 mark.

The Gulls went ahead, 50-47, on Motroni’s trey at 11:38, and clung to a 56-54 advantage with 6:02 to play until the Lions were able to stay in the game thanks in part to a seven points down the stretch from senior forward Lequan Gomes (Fairfield, Calif.). Gomes sunk the game-tying three-pointer with 29 seconds left to send the game to overtime tied, 64-64.

The Lions led throughout the extra session to complete the comeback victory.

Basden scored a season-high 17 points on 7-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line to lead the Gulls and registered his first career double-double with a career-high 12 rebounds.

BEYOND THE BOX

  • Junior guard Kamahl Walker (Worcester, Mass) had his 28-game double-digit scoring streak snapped with an eight-point performance today.
  • Sampson recorded his sixth double-double of the season as he tallied 11 points and a team-leading 15 rebounds (his second-most this season).
  • Motroni chipped in 13 points with six assists and two rebounds and junior guard Drew Sawyer (Norwalk, Conn.) added 11 points with three rebounds and four steals as the Gulls placed a total of four student-athletes in double figures.
  • Basden pulled down a career-high five offensive rebounds as part of his career-high 12 boards.
  • The Gulls out-rebounded the Lions, 43-30.
  • The Gulls are 1-1 in overtime this season. (Defeated Nichols in Dudley, Mass., 82-78, in OT on Dec. 2, 2015.)
  • Endicott turned the ball over a season-high 25 times.
  • The Gulls are 7-3 this season when having a lead at halftime.
  • 23 points in the second half was the Gulls’ lowest point total in any half this season.

  • Senior guard Jaylen Owens (Johns Creek, Ga.) and Gomes each contributed a game-high 23 points.
  • Gomes and senior guard Jeremy Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) each grabbed a team-leading six rebounds off the glass and had a team-leading five steals apiece.
  • The Lions scored 29 points off of 25 Gulls’ turnovers.
  • Eastern Nazarene opened the season on a nine-game winning streak, lost five in a row, and now has won the past three consecutive games.
  • The Lions are 1-0 in overtime this season.

NOTES

  • Endicott is 18-10 all-time and 6-5 on the road at Eastern Nazarene dating back prior to the 2002 season.
  • The Gulls are 2-1all-time in overtime versus Eastern Nazarene.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL WINS

QUINCY - The Endicott women’s basketball team stepped it up in the second half en route to a 59-47 road victory in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon inside the Lahue Physical Education Center.

With the win, the Gulls improved to 10-7 overall, 8-2 in conference play, while Eastern Nazarene fell to 10-7, 5-5 CCC on the season.

The Gulls got on the scoreboard first with junior forward Sarah Hood‘s (Burlington, Mass.) layup with 8:31 to play in the first quarter for the first points of the game.

Eastern Nazarene answered with a three-pointer by senior guard Jasmine Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif.) at 7:45 and a layup from junior guard Celina Calderon (Lompoc, Calif.) at 7:11 to take a 5-2 lead.

Hood responded with a jumper at 5:37 to score four of Endicott’s six points in the opening quarter.

The Lions went on a 6-0 run for the remainder of the first quarter until sophomore guard Gabriella Coppola (Watertown, Mass.) hit a jump shot as the quarter came to a close with Endicott trailing, 11-6.

Endicott regained the lead on senior guard Kelsey Cuddy‘s (Madison, Conn.)  layup with 3:38 left in the first half to go up 16-15.

Coppola led the floor with six points in the first half as the Gulls held a narrow 19-17 advantage heading into the break.

The third quarter saw two ties early on at 19-all and 21-all before the Gulls took control with senior guard Caity Lowry‘s (Quincy, Mass.) pair of free throws sunk at the 7:37 mark to give the Gulls a 23-21 edge.

Endicott was able to grow its lead to 39-30 at the end of the third quarter thanks in part to a 20-point effort from six different Gulls contributing and tacked on another 20 points in the fourth quarter as Endicott built their largest lead of the game (16 points) with 2:24 left in the game.

Coppola scored a career-high 14 points to lead the Gulls, in addition to pulling down four rebounds, dishing out four assists and recording three steals.

BEYOND THE BOX

  • The Gulls scored just six points in the first quarter, tied for their lowest total in a single quarter this season (6 in the first quarter home vs. Roger Williams on Jan. 7, 2016).
  • Endicott held the Lions to just six points in the second quarter, for the third lowest total allowed in a single quarter this season.
  • The Gulls held their opponent under 10 points in a single quarter for the eighth time this season.
  • Endicott placed two more student-athletes in double figures as Hood chipped in 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds and Cuddy added 10 points, six rebounds, one assists, three steals and one block.
  • The Gulls went 0-for-4 from three-point range, for the first time this season with zero made three-pointers.

  • Sophomore guard Jaysa Cooper (Frisco, Texas) led the Lions with 12 points and six rebounds.
  • Senior forward Elia Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) grabbed a team-leading eight boards to go with four points.
  • 15 of the Lions’ 23 turnovers occurred in the first half.
  • Eastern Nazarene out-rebounded the Gulls 38-37.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL SPLITS

PROVIDENCE – The Endicott men’s volleyball team split a pair of matches against Lasell College and Johnson & Wales University (JWU) on Saturday afternoon. Endicott fell to Lasell, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-22), but bounced back versus JWU, 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-27, 17-15), to claim its first win of the 2016 season (1-3).

MATCH ONE: Lasell 3, Endicott 0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-22)

Jeffrey Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.) guided the Lasers to their first victory of the year with 17 kills (.452 hitting percentage), nine digs, and three service aces.

John Osborne (Freehold, N.J.) and Alex Wasik (Milford, Mass.) highlighted Endicott’s offense as both student-athletes put home a team-high eight kills in the loss.

Late in the first set with Lasell leading 20-19, Tristan Davis (Rochester, N.Y.) halted a potential comeback bid from the Gulls with back-to-back kills that eventually pushed the Lasers to a 25-21 victory. Lasell then went on to take set two by using a 7-0 run with the scored tied at 12-12 after playing through ten ties and four lead changes. In set three, Davis broke a 22-all tie with his seventh and final kill of the match before an attack error and a service ace completed the sweep for the Lasers.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is 21-3 in the all-time series against Lasell, which dates back to 2000.
  • Lasell has won its last two season openers.

FOR THE FOES

  • Andrew Glenn (Westport, Conn.) facilitated the attack with a match-high 34 assists.
  • The Lasers notched one block solo and 10 block assists. Ryan Jackson (Canton, Ohio) led the team with three block assists.

MATCH TWO: Endicott 3, JWU 2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-27, 17-15)

Trailing 15-14 in the final set of the match, Endicott rallied behind back-to-back kills from Osborne and Wasik, and a solo block from Troy Riorden (Fairport, N.Y.) to walk-off with a 3-2 victory over JWU (2-5). The fifth set alone saw 15 ties and five lead changes occur.

Endicott freshman Jeremy Doski (Sandy Hook, Conn.) fueled the Gulls offensively with a career-high 19 kills (.357 hitting percentage) alongside three digs and one service ace. Wasik added nine kills, while Riorden and Dan Seaver (Milford, Mass.) chipped in with eight kills apiece.

Freshman setter Devin Racey (Voorheesville, N.Y.) facilitated the offense with a career-high 47 assists, and also registered his first career double-double by compiling a team-high 13 digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • With today’s win, Endicott leads the all-time series, 17-9.
  • Riorden also added 12 digs, and one block solo to the victory.
  • Seth Braquet (Destrehan, La.) tallied a career-high 13 digs, while Ryan Healy (Fair Lawn, N.J.) contributed 10 digs. Healy has now registered ten or more digs in three straight matches.

FOR THE FOES

  • Ryan Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) and Brendan Baker (Providence, R.I.) tied for the team-high in kills with 13 each. Baker also had ten digs to pick up a double-double.
  • Cameron Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) recorded his first career triple-double with 10 kills, 39 assists, and 16 digs. Ponce also added three block assists to his stat line and three service aces.
  • Alex Sada (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all student-athletes with 18 digs to go along with nine kills, two assists, and two service aces.
