Endicott College Saturday Sports Results: Men’s Basketball Wins, Women Lose -Women’s Hockey Ties Morrisville State

Men’s Basketball Wins

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Endicott men’s basketball team downed host Roger Williams University, 64-51, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon inside the Recreation Center Gymnasium.

In an all-around team effort, every student-athlete in the Gulls’ lineup contributed points. Junior forward Daquan Sampson (Germantown, Md.) led the way as he paced all scorers with a game-high 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Endicott led from the beginning, and built a double-digit lead with 7:13 to play in the opening stanza on sophomore guard Joel Villa‘s (Bronx, N.Y.) layup. The Gulls managed to extend their lead to 20-points with 56 seconds remaining in the first half on Sampson’s three-pointer and sent the Gulls into the locker room up 38-19 at the break.

The Gulls’ balanced offensive attack withstood a second-half surge from Roger Williams, as the Hawks were able to cut the deficit to 10 with 4:59 left in the game on junior guard Andrew Wasik’s (Gainesville, Fla.) layup and that’s as close as the Hawks would get the rest of the way as Endicott won its second game in a row.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Gulls also scored 64 points in an earlier win this season over the Hawks on Jan. 7, 2016.
  • Endicott held its opponent to a season-low 19 points in the first half.
  • Endicott forced 20 Hawks’ turnovers and turned those into 25 points.
  • The Gulls had a season-high 13 steals, as Villa had a team-high four swipes.
  • Senior guard Chris Light (Derry, N.H.) tied his season-high with seven points.

FOR THE FOES

  • Senior center Trevor Fahmy (Bedford, N.H.) and Wasik tied for the most points, each putting up ten points for the Hawks.
  • Fahmy also brought down a team-high seven rebounds.
  • The Hawks out-rebounded the Gulls, 31-29.

NOTES

  • The Gulls lead the all-time series 25-7, and also own a 9-3 advantage on the road at Roger Williams dating back to the 1994 season.
  • Endicott swept the season series, as the Gulls edged the Hawks, 64-61, in Beverly, Mass. on Jan. 7, 2016.

Women’s Basketball Loses

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Endicott women’s basketball team suffered a 72-64 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon in the Ryan Weekes ’12 Memorial Game inside the Recreation Center Gymnasium.

Junior forward Sarah Hood (Burlington, Mass.) paced the Gulls with a career-high 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds as the team erased an early 5-2 deficit to take a 12-11 edge.

A 6-0 run over the next two minutes and eventually put the Gulls up, 21-13, at the end of the first quarter for Endicott’s largest lead of the game.

Roger Williams tied the game at 33-all on senior guard Rachel Battista’s (Johnston, R.I.) pair of free throws with 2:10 remaining in the first half, but Endicott pulled ahead for a 40-35 advantage going into halftime.

Endicott led for much of the third quarter, as Roger Williams slowly chipped away at the score to tie it up again at 51-51 on senior guard Angelica Ariola’s (Prospect, Conn.) three-pointer at the 3:10 mark of the third quarter and took the lead on Battista’s trey to close out the quarter in favor of the Hawks, 54-52.

Roger Williams out-scored the Gulls in every frame except the first and survived two tied scores (54-54 and 60-60) in the fourth quarter before putting the Gulls way down the stretch with free throws as 16 of the Hawks’ 18 points in the quarter came courtesy of the charity stripe.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Gulls placed two student-athletes in double figures as sophomore guard Hannah Kiernan (Wenham, Mass.) joined Hood in double digits with 15 points.
  • Endicott had its four-game win streak snapped today.
  • This game featured six ties and nine lead changes.

FOR THE FOES

  • Battista finished with a game-high 23 points on 4-of-9 from the field, 1-of-3 from three-point range and a game-high 14-of-16 from the free throw line.
  • Ariola and junior guard Katie Lowerre (Sharon, Mass.) were also in double figures with also 18 points and 13 points, respectively.
  • The Hawks converted 27-of-36 free throws.
  • Roger Williams won the battle off the glass, 35-32.

  • Endicott is 16-14 all-time and 6-9 on the road at Roger Williams dating back prior to the 2001 season.
  • The Hawks won the most recent meeting before tonight, 61-51, in Beverly, Mass. on Jan. 7, 2016 and earned a series sweep of the Gulls this season.

Women’s Ice Hockey Ties

BEVERLY – The Endicott women’s ice hockey team erased a two-goal deficit in the third period to earn a 2-2 overtime tie against Morrisville State on Saturday afternoon at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.

Trailing 2-0 early in the third, Endicott freshman Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) redirected a shot taken from the point by classmate Lexi Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) into the back of the net past Morrisville State goaltender Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta) at 6:10 to make it a 2-1 contest.

Schmaltz then went on to hold the Gulls scoreless over the next 12-plus minutes of action before Courtney Walpole (Allen, Texas) evened up the matchup as an extra attacker with her third goal of the season at 18:37. Danielle Comorre (Tujunga, Calif.) generated the scoring opportunity by firing a shot from the slot that Walpole knocked down and under Schmaltz’s pads.

In the first, Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ontario) gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead at 13:10 when she beat Endicott freshman goaltender Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) with a low shot from the blue line through traffic for her first power play goal of the season (third overall). Meanwhile, Stephanie Strymecki (Kelowna, British Columbia) pushed the Mustangs’ advantage to 2-0 early in the third (3:27) by converting a breakaway chance with a slick right to left deke move for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Jonsson stopped 29 shots (9-5-4), while Schmaltz recorded 38 saves (6-8-3) in the draw.

  • Endicott is now 1-0-1 in the all-time series versus Morrisville State.
  • Layo won a team-high 13 faceoffs.
  • The Gulls are undefeated in their last four contests (3-0-1).

  • Freshman forward Maria deWilde (Caistorville, Ontario) notched a game-high 19-faceoff wins, while classmate Kelley Graham (Mississauga, Ontario) won 16 faceoffs.
  • The Mustangs are 3-5-2 on the road this season, and are 2-1-1 in their last four games.

Men’s Volleyball Loses

NASHUA, N.H. – The Endicott men’s volleyball team fell to Lasell College, 3-2, by scores of 25-23, 25-27, 19-25, 25-22, and 15-9, on Saturday night in its opening match of the Live Free Or Die Invitational hosted at Daniel Webster College.

Senior outside John Osborne (Freehold, N.J.) paced the Endicott attack by tying his career-high in kills with 20 to go along with 12 digs, two block assists, and two service aces. Alex Wasik (Milford, Mass.) also contributed 15 putaways, while Troy Riorden (Fairport, N.Y.) had 13 kills and Jeremy Doski (Sandy Hook, Conn.) notched 12 kills.

Cameron Little (San Diego, Calif.) ran the offense on 53 assists – two shy of his career high – and freshman Ryan Healy (Fair Lawn, N.J.) helped guide the defense – along with Osborne – by collecting 11 digs.

Lasell senior outside Jeffrey Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.) led all student-athletes with a match-high 25 kills on 54 swings (.370 hitting percentage). Vautrin also added five digs, two block solos, two block assists, and one service ace to his stat line. Patrick MacDonald (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Tristan Davis (Rochester, N.Y.) chipped in with 17 and 14 kills, respectively.

In the fifth set, Lasell broke a 2-2 tie with an 8-4 run behind two kills from Vautrin, one via MacDonald and another by Ryan Jackson (Canton, Ohio) alongside four errors and never looked back. The Lasers eventually went on to close out the set and the match on back-to-back kills by Vautrin and MacDonald to halt Endicott’s three-match winning streak.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is 21-3 in the all-time series against Lasell, which dates back to 2000, despite tonight’s loss.
  • Lasell has received votes in two out of the three American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-15 national polls.
  • The Gulls hit .313 as a team, which ranks as their highest hitting percentage in a loss this season.

  • The Lasers are currently on a three-match winning streak.
  • Senior Andrew Glenn (Westport, Conn.) dished out a match-high 55 assists.
