Danvers Man Scuba Diving Off Nahant Saturday Dies – One Other Diver Rescued – Photos – Video

DANVERS – (Video & Photos A Danvers man has died following a scuba diving incident off Forty Steps Beach, Saturday afternoon.

Below is a statement from the Essex County District Attorney’s Office

On Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 443 pm, Nahant Police received a 911 call from a woman reporting she was off the coast of East Point in Nahant with two scuba divers in the water and one was unresponsive. The Nahant Harbormaster vessel was dispatched to the scene off East Point and pulled both divers on board. The Nahant Harbormaster proceeded to Tudor Wharf where both divers were transported to Salem Hospital for medical treatment.

One diver, Mr. Vinicius O. Vianna, 38, Danvers, was pronounced deceased.  The other diver, a 42-year old Bedford man was treated for exhaustion but was conscious and alert.

Based upon the investigation, it appears that Mr. Vianna ran out of oxygen and, when attempting to surface, the current and swells pushed him against some rocks. Mr. Vianna was an experienced diver and was certified as a rescue diver.

The matter remains under investigation, however, foul play is not suspected at this time
