SALEM POLICE OFFICER ARRAIGNED ON SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES
Brian Butler, 56, of Salem, was arraigned today in Salem District Court for rape and indecent assault & battery in connection with an incident that took place in the Salem Police Department on Halloween.
Judge Robert Brennan set bail at $10,000 and ordered the defendant to surrender his fire arms and to have no contact with the victim.
Essex Assistant District Attorney AJ Camelio requested $25,000 due to the seriousness of the charges. ADA Camelio told the court that on November 5th, the victim came to the Salem Police Department to file a complaint, alleging that an officer, later identified as Brian Butler, sexually assaulted him while he was in protective custody in the early morning hours of October 31st. The defendant is accused of touching the victim’s genital area while the victim was making a phone call. He is also accused of performing oral sex upon the victim in a broom closet without his consent.
The defendant is represented by Attorney Randy Chapman and is presumed innocent until proven guilty. A Probable Cause Hearing is scheduled for December 15, 2016.
