Salem State Baseball Earns Win Over Suffolk

SALEM – Salem State opened up their 2016 home campaign with a 6-5 victory over Suffolk University on Tuesday afternoon at the Central Campus Baseball Field. The game was called in the bottom of the eighth due to darkness. The Vikings even their record at 1-1 while the Rams open 0-1.

Mike Richardson (Belmont, MA) earned the start for Salem State and went 4.1 innings allowing four hits and three runs with two strikeouts to earn a no-decision. Starter Kyle Turner (Nashua, NH) suffered the loss for Suffolk, lasting 4.2 innings, while giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, with eight strikeouts.. Ryan Pordes went the remaining 2.1 innings and limited the Vikings to three hits to keep the Rams in the game.

Salem State wasted no time putting runs on the scoreboard. Mac Daniel Singleton (Everett, MA) reached first after getting hit by a pitch and a Mike Davis (Peabody, MA) single advanced the junior to second. Pre-season All-American second baseman Richard Fecteau (Newbury, MA) put Singleton in scoring position with a sacrifice fly, before Joe White (Bellingham, MA) singled to bring both Davis and Singleton home and make it a 2-0 game in favor of the hosts.

The two clubs went back-and-forth over the next three innings, each finding their stride. Down 2-0, Suffolk broke its silence in the top of the fifth not only getting on the scoreboard, but capturing a 4-2 lead with four runs. Drew Carter (Newburyport, MA) and Rob Marks (Revere, MA) hit back-to-back doubles that brought in Luke Ronchi (Randolph, NJ) and Jake Frasca (Darien, CT). Later, Seth Coiley (Arlington, MA) drew a bases loaded walk and Sean Cameron (Milford, MA) added an RBI groundout .

The Vikings countered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Davis and Fecteau hit back-to-back RBI doubles to tie the score before Alex Toomey (Beverly, MA) added a sacrifice fly to give the Vikings a 5-4 advantage. Coiley tied the game again for Suffolk in the seventh with a run scoring single, but Salem state countered in the bottom of the inning as Dan Connors (Danvers, MA) drove in Toomey with what proved to be the game-winning run with an RBI single.

Salem State was led by Connors, who had three hits and Davis (2-for-4, 2R, 1RBI). Singleton scored two runs while White collected a pair of hits with two RBI.

Sean Buckland (Lynn, MA) earned the win in relief. The senior pitched the final 3.2 innings for the Vikings, striking out four hitters and allowing two runs (one unearned).

Salem State heads to the Sunshine State for a seven-game, one-week tour opening up against Nichols Sunday, March 13. Suffolk heads to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational for its Spring Training trip where the Rams will face 10 opponents over nine days. The action for the Rams is scheduled to begin Friday, March 11 versus Montclair State.

Salem State Lacrosse Wins

SALEM Ben Melaugh (Billerica, MA) scored four second half goals and David Dempsey(Tewksbury, MA) and Bobby Bourgeois (Billerica, MA) added a pair apiece as Salem State came-from-behind to defeat Nichols College 9-8 on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Vikings have now won their third straight to open the season while the Bison slip to 1-2.

The first period ended in a 1-1 draw as both teams played well. MacKenzie Martin (Merrimack, NH) opened the scoring beating Salem State goalkeeper Kevin Lally (Beverly, MA) high. Dempsey responded later in the first to tie the game. Dempsey put Salem State up momentarily in the second with another score before Nichols ripped off four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead into halftime. Martin scored twice during the run, while Paul Tessier (Mirror Lake, NH) and Casey Campanale (Shrewsbury, MA) each added a goal. Nichols dominated the period outshooting Salem State 9-1 while winning four-of-six face offs

Martin added a fifth unanswered goal for the Bison to begin the third period before Melaugh and Bourgeois tallied a pair to draw the Vikings to within 6-4. The teams traded goals before Martin added his fourth goal of the game that gave Nichols an 8-5 lead heading into the fourth. Salem State turned up the tempo in the final frame, outshooting Nichols 10-3 as they fought back to tie the game. Melaugh was the catalyst, netting back-to-back goals to bring the score to 8-7 with 10:57 remaining.Alex Pearsons (Burlington, MA) beat Keane to tie the game before Bourgeois capped the comeback with a goal with 1:34 remaining. The Vikings defense’ held Nichols without a goal over the final 16:08 and Lally made a key save with less than a minute remaining to preserve the win.

Lally made 13 saves to improve to 3-0 while Keane made 12 stops in the loss. Nichols went 17-20 (.850%) on face offs, but were forced into 22 turnovers, including seven in the fourth. 

William Angell (Littleton, MA) sparked the defense with seven caused turnovers while registering five groundballs. Kevin D’Angelo (Pelham, NH) won 17-of-19 (.895%) face offs for Nichols.

Salem State travels to Mount Ida next Wednesday for a 3:30 start. Nichols will face UMass Boston on Thursday.

Endicott Men’s Lacrosse Loses to Middlebury

BEVERLY – The Endicott men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 7 nationally ranked Middlebury College, 16-10, on Tuesday night at Hempstead Stadium.

Will Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) led the Gulls offensively in the loss with four goals and one assist. Mitchell Tapley (Falmouth, Maine) also contributed a hat-trick, while Colin Bannon (Westport, Conn.) added one goal and a team-high three helpers. Will Farfala (Glen Rock, N.J.) and Peter Field Jr. (Hampstead, N.H.) rounded out the attack with solo tallies.

Middlebury senior midfielder Sean Carroll (Wilton, Conn.) paced all scorers with five goals, to go along with one assist, while Jon Broome (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) compiled six points on two markers and four assists. Tim Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) and Kyle Soroka (Boxborough, Mass.) also highlighted the Panthers’ offense by scoring two goals apiece.

Tied 3-3 after the first quarter, Middlebury received goals from five different scorers in the second to claim an 8-5 cushion headed into the break. Soroka and Broome opened up the second with back-to-back goals at 13:29 and 8:21, respectively, before Bannon answered for Endicott with his lone tally of the night at 5:44 to make it a 5-4 contest.

Jack Gould (Prides Crossing, Mass.) and Giarrusso followed with consecutive goals (4:27, 2:56) and Jack Cleary (Bethesda, Md.) capped the scoring for the Panthers with 24-seconds remaining in the half to manufacture their three-point gap on the scoreboard.

Middlebury went on to pull away in the second half as the guests outscored Endicott by an identical 8-5 score for the win.

Endicott goalie Cameron Bell (Falmouth, Maine) stopped a game-high 15 shots in the loss (1-3), while Will Ernst (San Francisco, Calif.) made seven saves in the win (1-0).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Tommy Hughes (Coram, N.Y.) went 17-for-29 at the face-off X and also notched 11 ground balls.
  • Hughes has not lost a matchup at the X this season in four games played.
  • Field Jr. also dished out two assists to finish the night with three points (his third multi-point game in 2016).

FOR THE FOES

  • The Panthers are ranked No. 7 in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III national poll.
  • Middlebury now owns a 4-1 record in the all-time series versus the Gulls.
