Salem State Men’s Soccer Fall to Plymouth State

SALEM – Plymouths State scored two second half goals enroute to a 2-0 victory over Salem State in the season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field. Erik Ljunglof (Orebro, Sweden) and Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) provided the offense for the Panthers as Plymouth State opens the season 1-0. Salem State, which tied the Panthers 3-3 in their opener a season ago, slip to 0-1.

Salem State and Plymouth State played to a scoreless tie in the first half as both teams battled for possession at midfield. Despite outshooting Plymouth State 6-1 in the first half, the Vikings only quality scoring chance came in the 17th minute when Joao DeSouza (Lowell, Mass.) broke free and just missed converting as his shot sailed just wide of the crossbar.

Plymouth State went ahead in the 52nd minute as Ljunglof converted from 20 yards out on a pass from Rutherford, who took advantage of a quick start off a free kick.  Rutherford increased the lead to 2-0 when he laced a shot past goalie Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass.) in the 79th minute.

Linus Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) earned the win in goal for the Panthers, making six saves. James Mansour (Auburn, N.H.) finished the combined shutout, stopping two shots in thirty minutes of action.

Enos took the loss as Plymouth State managed just three shots on net as Salem State played well defensively for most of the game, holding a 5-0 edge in corners while outshooting the Panthers 15-3.

WPI Women’s Soccer Edges Salem State 2-1

SALEM –  Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, N.H.) booted home the game-winner with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime as the WPI Engineers escaped with a 2-1 victory over the Salem State Vikings in the inaugural game of the 2017 season for both teams at Alumni Field on Friday evening. WPI starts 1-0 on the year while Salem State stumbles out of the gate with a one-goal loss.

Gomarlo outfought a Salem State defender and got off a clean shot from 15 yards out that skidded past Salem State goalkeeper Amanda Backe (Danvers, Mass.) with just 44 seconds remaining in the extra period.

WPI held the advantage offensively in the first half, outshooting the Vikings 5-2. The Engineers nearly scored in the 15th minute when Megan Hanshaw (Simsbury, Conn.) just missed connecting as her shot narrowly sailed wide right. The Vikings countered in the 18th minute when Meg McFarland’s (Dedham, Mass.) shot went just left of the net as goalie Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, Conn.) was caught out of position.

Leah Beauton (Colchester, Conn.) put WPI on the board with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half when she took a feed from Lizzie Rooney (Harvard, Mass.) and beat Salem State goalie Backe with a shot to the lower right corner.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, the Vikings’ Casey McFall (Wilmington, Mass.) fired in a rebound after Emily Boyle’s long arcing shot from 25 yards out got behind WPI’s goalkeeper to tie the score at 1-1 in the 54th minute.

WPI kept the pressure on offensively as they outshot Salem State 6-2 in the second half, but failed to convert as Salem State’s defense stood firm.

Neither goalie was tested offensively as Hoops recorded just one save in the win while her counterpart Backe stopped four shots in the loss.

Salem State held a slight advantage in corner kicks 4-3.
