Navigators Fall Just Short Of Victory In Speros Varinos’ Return To The Team

The North Shore Navigators played another hard fought game on Saturday night when they took on the Seacoast Mavericks in the final game of their six game home stand. The Navigators were unable to produce enough offense to take down the visitors, and they fell by a final score of 4-1.

Despite a lackluster performance on offense, the Navigators got a strong effort out of their pitching staff. The main story was the return of Speros Varinos (Tufts University) who was the Future’s Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) Relief Pitcher of the Year last season. Varinos looked strong in his 2016 debut, and he struck out six batters through six innings pitched. He only allowed two hits during his outing, and the two runs that he gave up were unearned.

After Varinos’ great performance, relief pitcher Brian Burke (Curry College) continued his solid season by pitching three strong innings. Burke allowed only one hit on his outing and he struck out four Mavericks. His lone blemish was a solo home run he allowed to Jacob Lebel (NYIT) in the eighth inning.

Though the Navigators had trouble getting their offense going during the game, they still did get a good performance from a couple of players. Notably, the players at the top of the order had the most success. MacDaniel Singleton (Salem State) and Joey Pena (St. Thomas Aquinas) went a combined 3-7 on the night, and Pena also reached base on a walk. Singleton, meanwhile, raised his batting average on the season to a red hot .338.

The lone RBI on the night for the Navigators came from Mike D’Acunti (Southeastern University) in the first inning. He hit a bloop single into left field that scored Singleton, who had reached second on a double and got to third on a ground out.

The Navigators will return to Fraser Field on Tuesday, June 28 when they host the Torrington Titans. First pitch for that game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m
