Salem one of 25 municipalities to join MassCEC’s feasibility study related to on-street EV charging
SALEM, MA – Mayor Dominick Pangallo is pleased to announce that the City of Salem has been selected as one of 25 municipalities to participate in the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s (“MassCEC”) On-Street Charging Solutions Program as part of the Feasibility Study offering. This program aims to assess the potential for on-street electric vehicle charging solutions in locations which benefit residents and Environmental Justice Communities where off street parking options are not available. Being selected to participate in this program helps to advance the City’s mobility goals as outlined in Resilient Together with the goal of increasing accessible electric vehicle charging infrastructure for Salem residents.
“The wider use of electric vehicles is a critical part of the Resilient Together climate action plan here in Salem, so we’re incredibly excited to be selected to participate in this program,” said Mayor Pangallo, “We’ve heard often from residents who are interested in purchasing electric vehicles but ultimately opt not to solely because they can’t charge at home. This initiative will give us a plan as to where and how we can remove some of these barriers to electric vehicle adoption and move us even closer to meeting our community’s sustainability goals. I’m very grateful to MassCEC for their support in this work and to the City staff who developed our application to the program.”
According to MassCEC, access to charging is a significant barrier to electric vehicle adoption for renters and residents without private parking. On-street charging, including curbside, pole-mounted, and streetlight charging stations, is appealing for municipalities looking to ensure all residents, especially those living in Environmental Justice Communities, have access to sufficient charging options. However, to install on-street charging stations, municipalities face high upfront costs and complex technical issues. Through MassCEC’s consultant/vendor team, led by Commonwealth Electrical Technologies and supported by Leidos, On-Street Charging Solutions provides technical and financial assistance to municipalities interested in on-street charging.
