Boys’ Tennis: St. John’s Prep Defeats Marblehead, 4-1; Girls’ Lacrosse: Ipswich 17, Pentucket 6

Non-league boys varsity tennis match St. John’s Prep 4, Marblehead 1; Boys JV won by Marblehead 3-2

On a warm spring day when the MHS varsity boys travelled to Danvers and the JV played at Seaside Park in Marblehead, the V match was won by SJP 4-1 and the JV was one by Marblehead 3-2.

At SJP, the first sets were close and I was proud of how our boys competed. They put themselves in a position to win and in the case of 1st singles player, Justin Faia, he did win in an upset win over senior, Nick Silacci 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 10-8. Both boys were tired from grueling matches the day before in which Justin had also come through in a 10-point super tie-breaker after splitting sets in the match against Swampscott. Justin is the consummate competitor and when it’s close, he finds a way to win.

  1. Senior quad-captain Justin Faia beat senior Nick Silacci 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 10-8
  2. Senior quad-captain Felix Litvak lost to Jacob Silacci 6-4, 6-1. Felix was ahead in the beginning of the first set and his aggressive baseline style made for a competitive match.
  3. Sophomore Billy Ackerman lost to junior Mikey Prokopis 6-2, 6-0. They had excellent baseline rallies. I was glad to see Billy going for his shots against this strong opponent.

1st doubles: Senior quad captains Sam Orenstein and Garrett Tully played some good smart doubles but lost to fellow seniors David Cunningham and Mihang Xu 6-2,6-3.

2nd doubles: Sophomores Dan Litvak and Jack Quigley had a super first set, losing only in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) but then lost the second set 6-1 against Jack Malowepszy and Carlton Riester

In sub-V play, seniors Mike Conlin and Luke Fobert lost 6-3.

The JV match held in Marblehead at Seaside Park was a great display of Marble head’s depth in the line up and bodes well for future seasons:

1st singles: Sophomore Adam Sherf won 4-6, 6-4, 10-8

2nd singles: Sophomore Tony Gluskin won 6-3, 6-4

3rd singles: Mason Friedman won 6-4, 6-2

1st doubles: Juniors Ben Birnback and Max Radmann lost 6-3, 6-2

2nd doubles: Sophomores Jack Curran and Eric Stammiz lost 6-4, 6-2

Coach Keri O’Connor:
“I am proud to have another win where our team met our goal of playing “better together” (which is our theme for the season).  All players contributed on the field today, helped each other out in the heat and kept the game running strong from start to finish.  Meghan O’Connor was key in draw controls, Emma Moulton played a strong low attack and our defensive line worked with our middies to clear and swing the ball in our midfield.”
