From Beverly Mayor Mike Cahill:
This is Mayor Mike Cahill with a Wednesday evening trash and recycling update. Today, Republic Services picked up regular Monday customers’ trash. If Republic missed your street today, please e-mail me at mayorcahill@beverlyma.gov and I will try to get a Republic truck to come collect your trash tomorrow. Gregg St. residents will have your trash collected later in the day tomorrow after the paving has been completed and the road surface is ready.
Also tomorrow, regular Tuesday customers should put your trash only out before 7 AM to be collected tomorrow. No recycling will be collected by Republic until further notice, so please do not put recycling at the curb. We are working with Republic on this issue. Also, no one else except regular Tuesday customers should put anything out at the curb for tomorrow.
Yesterday, a fire was observed burning in one of the compost piles at Standley St., necessitating the closure of the facility the past two days. The fire has been put out, and the Fire Department continues to monitor all the piles. The city’s Fire Chief has determined that no additional yard waste should be deposited at the site until the materials there are removed. We have notified Republic Services, as they are contractually obligated to actively manage the site including the piles and have not done so. We hope and intend that this situation will be remedied quickly, and we are working towards this end. Tomorrow morning, the Fire Department will determine whether it is safe to finish up and remove the hoses from the site. If this happens, we will reopen the Standley St. site for recycling drop off only – no yard waste can be brought to Standley St. until further notice, but when possible, we will reopen for recycling drop off and will at that time announce the reopening on the city website and social media platforms.
Please also know that the city has not paid anything to Republic since the strike started. We have been documenting costs incurred by the city to deal with problems caused by Republic’s non-performance of the contract and costs incurred to provide services that Republic has not provided. Further, we are documenting the services that Republic has not provided and calculating related costs. Republic has sent us a draft bill for July, and we are working to protect your interests as we determine what we legally can withhold from payment to Republic. This will likely take some time to work through and we are being thorough in doing so
