AUDET, LOCAL PRODUCT PRENTICE TO JOIN 2018 NAVS FROM NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE

LYNN — The Futures Collegiate Baseball League’s North Shore Navigators signed pitcher Shayne Audet and versatile Saugus native John Prentice of the New England College (NEC) Pilgrims to their 2018 roster, general manager Bill Terlecky announced on Monday. The two current college freshmen will become the first NEC players to join the North Shore ballclub in its history.

“We’re excited to welcome Shayne and John to the Navigators,” Terlecky said. “They are two young players from an up-and-coming collegiate program, so I look forward to watching their growth as freshmen and having them with us at Fraser Field this coming summer.”

Audet, a right-handed pitcher, attended Sabis International Charter School in his hometown of Springfield, Mass., where he was named the team’s Most Valuable Player three times and an All-Western Massachusetts First Team selection twice. He set the school’s all-time hits record with 129 in addition to serving as a key arm over his five varsity seasons, and also played four years of varsity soccer. The six-foot, 185-pounder also pitched for East Springfield Post 420 and NE Elite before enrolling at NEC, which is located in Henniker, N.H.

Though NEC is a new college program for the Navs, Prentice joins the club as a local product. He hails from Saugus and played four years for the Sachems of baseball before transferring to Lynn Classical for his senior year. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Prentice will be a valuable asset to both Chris Shank’s Pilgrims and first-year Navs manager Todd Alford as he is a pitcher, catcher, and has experience on the middle infield.

The Pilgrims won a program-record 24 games during Shank’s first season at the helm in 2017 after going just 7-25 the year prior. A 10-game winning streak from April 24 through May 7 allowed NEC to play for its first North Atlantic Conference title in school history. NEC will join the New England Collegiate Conference beginning next academic year.

The Navigators will be announcing more additions to the roster in the coming weeks and months in preparation for the 2018 season, which begins on Thursday, May 31.
