DANVERS – The St. John’s Prep Eagles opened the season with a 42-20 win over Marshfield on Friday. According to Prep coach Brian St. Pierre, quarterback Chris Vargas is a big kid with a strong arm that propelled the offense.. St. John’s Prep 42, Marshfield 20: Highly touted freshman quarterback Chris Vargas came as advertised, throwing for 223 yards and a pair of first quarter touchdowns while completing 11-of-19 passes as the Eagles shot out to a 35-7 halftime
lead and rolled to an opening night triumph at Glatz Field.
Senior captain and wideout Merrick Barlow also had a huge game, catching six passes for 156 yards and a pair of touchdowns from 50 and 43 yards out, respectively, from Vargas.
Edwin Castro added two touchdown runs and an interception for the locals, while senior captain Deacon Robillard hit freshman Riley Selvais with a 13-yard scoring pass. Jeff Quigley (11 carries, 61 yards) closed out the scoring for St. John’s Prep with a 3-yard TD plunge in the second half.
