From Hamilton-Wenham High School volleyball coach Marc Turiano:
The Hamilton-Wenham volleyball team earned a round-of-16 state tournament win over the visiting Nantucket Whalers by a score of 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 21-25, 25-14) on Sunday afternoon. After dominating the first set with strong performances from the service line, the Generals transition offense carried them through a more competitive second set. Troubles with serve receive put HW in a hole in the third set that proved to be insurmountable before a diving play by libero Ava Day sparked the run in the fourth set that allowed the Generals to put the game away.
Setter Hannah Ciriello ran an efficient and balanced offense with 33 assists, 2 aces, and 1 block assist, as the Generals hit .244 as a team. Middles Gaby Campbell (8 aces, 7 kills, 3 blocks, 2 dogs, 1 assist) and Grace Harres (5 kills, 4 kills) along with outside hitters Maddie Wilson (11 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces, 1.5 blocks) and Morgan Etna (9 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces) excelled not only at the net, but in all facets of the game. Libero Ava Day was a defensive stalwart with 8 digs to go with her 2 aces.
The Generals await the winner of the Ipswich-Oxford game on Tuesday evening.
