Over the Labor Day weekend we are reprising over 25 feature interviews with north shore football coaches. In these interviews the coaches share memories from the days as players and reflect on the events and people that have shaped them as coaches. These interviews were conducted in August, many of them prior to the first day of practices (8/18). After Labor Day, msonewsports will be previewing opening high school matchups on the opening weekend of play. (9/8)
BYFIELD – Masconomet High School football coach Gavin Monagle (100 career wins, 39-31 at Masco) has a full resume as a coach. An assistant principal at Masco’s Middle School, he coached for 16 years at Dom Savio, was an assistant to Jim Pugh (178-109 at Masco) at Masco for 7 years, and is now starting his eighth season as Chieftains’ head coach.
In the interview below, he recounts his earliest experiences in the game and reflects on the coaching influences in his career, as well as recoundting the life-long friendships developed with teammates, other coaches, and former student-athletes.
