Manchester-by-the-Sea Fire Department: It’s Time for Fun Fact Friday!!

Did you know that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers firefighter accountability an essential component of fire safety? NIOSH has identified failures in accountability as a contributing factor in numerous firefighter fatalities. Over the past year, the Manchester Fire Department has made significant strides in enhancing the accountability of our firefighters on the fireground and in other hazardous environments. Alongside many departments across Essex County, the Manchester Fire Department employs the Passport Accountability System. Please refer to the captions below each image for further details on the various components of this system.

Each member is issued a Passport ID tag that displays their radio’s emergency ID. These tags are attached to their truck at the beginning of each shift. Red tags are for company officers, while black tags are for firefighters. A tag placed upside down indicates to the incident commander that the individual is outside operating the apparatus.
This mobile incident command board is used to organize the PassPort Tags and identify where that particular company is operating.
This shows that Ladder 1 is on Floor 2 for fire attack.
The newest piece of the Passport System for Manchester is uniformed helmet shields, showing the apparatus a firefighter is working on (red for ladder) and the firefighter’s badge number.
This is a steering wheel-mounted command board allowing a chief officer to be inside of the vehicle, in a quiet environment enabling easier communications by limiting outside noise and stress factors.
