GLOUCESTER — Gloucester Fire Department paramedics helped to deliver a healthy baby girl in the back of a Gloucester Fire Department ambulance early Sunday morning, according to Fire Department Chief Eric Smith.
On Sunday, Dec. 8, at approximately 1:40 a.m., the Gloucester Fire Department was called to a home in the city for a report that a pregnant woman was in labor.
Companies arrived to find a mother in labor, and after assessing her on scene, they began transporting the woman to a local hospital.
While still en route to the hospital, the delivery became imminent and Firefighter/Paramedic Sean Ellis and Firefighter/Paramedic Abigail Meadowcroft helped to deliver a healthy baby girl in the back of the Rescue 1 ambulance. The baby was delivered at approximately 2:16 a.m.
Mother and baby were then transported to Beverly Hospital for further care, and both are reportedly doing well.
“The Gloucester Fire Department would like to congratulate the family on their new addition, and to highlight the great work of Firefighter/Paramedics Sean Ellis and Abigail Meadowcroft, who helped ensure a safe and happy birth despite challenging circumstances,” said Chief Smith. “This ambulance company did outstanding work, and had the honor of providing medical care for a positive moment in a family’s life. Not all EMS calls have such happy endings. We are proud to have had the opportunity to help this Gloucester family in need.”
