Newburyport Police Promote New Sergeant and New Lieutenant

NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Matthew Simons is pleased to report that the Newburyport Police Department promoted a new sergeant and a new lieutenant.

Officer Ryan Cutter was promoted to sergeant, and Sgt. Gregory Whitney was promoted to lieutenant. Mayor Sean Reardon appointed both men to their new positions on Tuesday.

The promotions are being made as a result of Marshal Simons’ promotion from lieutenant to city marshal.

Sgt. Cutter, 32, is a 10 year veteran of the Newburyport Police Department and a Newburyport native who graduated from Newburyport High School. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Roger Williams University, and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from UMass Lowell. Sgt. Cutter will be assigned as the department’s new evening shift supervisor.

Lt. Whitney, 40, is a 14-year veteran of the Newburyport Police Department and a Newburyport native who graduated from Newburyport High School. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University, and a Masters in Business Administration from Fitchburg State University. Lt. Whitney will be assigned as the administrative lieutenant on the day shift.

“I’m excited for the enthusiasm and knowledge that Sgt. Cutter and Lt. Whitney bring with them into their new roles” said Marshal Simons. “I have no doubt that our department and our community are better served because of these promotions.”

Both men, as well as Marshal Simons, will be sworn in on Thursday at 10 a.m. at City Hall.
