WEST NEWBURY – Around noon on Sunday, Sept. 1, West Newbury firefighters responded to 2 Georgetown Road for a report of a horse in distress. Upon arrival, first responders saw a 1,800-lb. Belgian Draft horse, Summer, that was down on the floor of a barn stall in significant distress.
West Newbury firefighters worked with specialty equine rescue personnel and the horse’s boarders to get it upright.
After 90 minutes, Summer was up and being cared for my emergency veterinarians.
The Amesbury Fire Department and Atlantic Ambulance joined West Newbury firefighters and other personnel at the scene. The Essex County Technical Rescue Team provided guidance to teams on scene.
“I would like to thank our amazing group of West Newbury first responders and the equine community in and around West Newbury for all of their assistance,” Chief Dwyer said. “This operation involved teamwork between multiple agencies and many individuals. Because of that joint effort, Summer was rescued.”
