On Wednesday, July 31, Adrian Pena, 18, of Lynn, is scheduled to be arraigned in Lynn District Court and charged in the murder of Kai Burgos, 17, of Lynn. Burgos was fatally shot in the 40 Federal Street parking lot of Market Basket in Lynn on June 15. Pena was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service in the Dominican Republic on July 16.

In addition to the U.S. Marshals Service, the Lynn Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS), the State Police Detective Unit (SPDU) assigned to the Office of Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker, and law enforcement officials in the Dominican Republic contributed to the investigation.

“We look forward to prosecuting this case to achieve justice, and hopefully some measure of peace, for Kai Burgos’ family,” Tucker said. “The perseverance and determination of law enforcement in this case speaks to their dedication in pursuit of a just outcome and to the safety of our community.”

“This arrest demonstrates our commitment to hold accountable those who commit acts of violence in our community,” said Lynn Chief of Police Chris Reddy. “I am grateful for the tremendous work of the Lynn Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, the Office of District Attorney Paul Tucker, and our partners at the U.S. Marshals Service.”

“The Massachusetts State Police remain focused on securing justice for victims of violent crime by thoroughly investigating and apprehending perpetrators, wherever they may be,” MSP Colonel John E. Mawn added. “We appreciate the many partners who collaborated to locate this fugitive abroad. This successful operation illustrates our unwavering commitment to those we swear to protect.”
