Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo Shares State of the Environment Message Commemorating Earth Day

SALEM  On the occasion of Earth Day, Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo offered an inaugural State of the Environment message, recognizing the important work happening in the City of Salem to promote sustainability and protect our planet, and looking forward to the future.

“Each action we take – even the small ones – can make a significant difference.” remarked Mayor Pangallo.  “We all have a role to play in safeguarding our environment, so let’s use this Earth Day to inspire further positive change.  Let’s work together to further our work toward fostering a cleaner, healthier community. Together we can build a sustainable future where nature thrives, and our children will inherit a world filled with hope and possibility.”

Emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts locally, regionally and globally, Mayor Pangallo announced in the message that in the week ahead he will be inviting all 75 Mayors and Town Managers who lead coastal communities across Massachusetts to join a new alliance to share best practices, coordinate actions related to resiliency and leverage federal and state funding opportunities in the most strategic manner possible.  A goal of the new Massachusetts Coastal Communities Alliance will be to share information and positive action in the face of the climate crisis.

Mayor Pangallo’s State of the Environment message also shared details on sixteen significant efforts that the City of Salem is undertaking to address climate challenges across the community.  The efforts range from cleaning the municipal electric supply, to resilience and restoration projects along Salem’s coastline, to city-wide tree planting commitments, as well as improving alternative transportation options and launching Salem’s offshore wind marshalling port.
