#1 Endicott Sweeps Doubleheader
STORRS, CT — The No. 1 nationally ranked Endicott baseball team swept No. 15 ranked Eastern Connecticut State in a doubleheader, 9-5 and 4-0, in exciting fashion on Saturday afternoon at Mansfield Outdoor Athletic Complex.
GAME ONE: No. 1 Endicott 9, No. 15 Eastern Connecticut 5
WP (8-0): Jordan Gottesman (Acton) — 8 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
LP (3-1): Matthew Wootton (Milford, Conn.) — 3.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Trailing by two in the top of the fourth, the Gulls put together a seven-run frame to take hold of the contest.
The offensive explosion began with three consecutive baserunners for the Gulls, as Dylan Pacheco (Dartmouth) reached on an error while Nicolas Notarangelo (Taunton) and Danny MacDougall (Taunton) each reached on singles.
After the Warriors recorded the first out of the inning, Robbie Wladkowski (Norwood) blooped one over
the head of the second baseman and drove in the first Endicott run of the afternoon (Pacheco). He was followed by TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine), who sent a line drive into right center to plate MacDougall and Notarangelo.
Zach Stephenson (Mansfield) kept the line moving, as he singled up the middle to score Wladkowski, making it three consecutive RBI base-knocks for the Blue and Green.
Following a pitching change for the Warriors, James Benestad (Northborough) made it four-consecutive hits with a single, setting up a bases-loaded opportunity for Joey Frammartino (North Raeding), who drove in a run via a hit-by-pitch.
Pacheco capped off the huge inning with a two-run double to right field, plating Benestad and Stephenson.
That run support was plentiful for Gottesman, who went a career-long eight innings with eight strikeouts.
Evan Scully (Maynard, Mass.) replaced him in the ninth and recorded the last three outs, sealing the 9-5 victory in game one.
GAME TWO: No. 1 Endicott 4, No. 15 Eastern Connecticut 0

LP (2-2): Chris Torres (West Springfield) — 6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K
John Connolly (Attleboro) toed the rubber for the Gulls in game two. He flourished in the outing, limiting the Warriors to just four baserunners (two walks, two hits) while striking out eight in his 7.2 innings of work.
Bagshaw relieved him in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and recorded the final out of the inning by way of the K, sending the Gulls to the ninth without a score.
Pacheco and Notarangelo led off the ninth with back-to-back walks, but Eastern Connecticut pitching was able to bounce back by retiring MacDougall and Brendan O’Neil (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) in succession. Wladkowski was able to reach base via a hit-by-pitch, setting up a bases loaded opportunity for Liponis, who was coming off a team-high three hits in game one.
On the third pitch of his at-bat, Liponis drilled one to right field that kept carrying and carrying, and eventually ended up zipping over the right field wall for a go-ahead grand slam, sending the Gulls into a frenzy. The shortstop was greeted at home plate by a bouncing Notarangelo and an ecstatic Wladkowski and Pacheco.
The momentum of that slam followed Bagshaw into the bottom of the ninth, who cruised through the frame with a 1-2-3 inning (two strikeouts), locking up the 4-0 win for the Gulls.
WHAT’S NEXT – No. 1 Endicott (28-2, 10-1 CCC) hosts Gordon on Tuesday for a 3:30 PM contest at North Field.
Salem State Baseball Splits DH with Mass Maritime
SALEM – AJ Pietrafesa (Harwinton, Ct.) hit a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning and starting pitcher Chase Dwight (West Newburry) recorded the win after pitching seven complete innings as Mass. Maritime earned a 2-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over Salem State at Central Campus Baseball Field on Saturday. Dwight allowed three hits, three walks with three strikeouts in the win. In game two, Antonio Belgrove (Stamford, Conn.) laced a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning, which proved to be the difference as Salem State salvaged the final game of their three game set versus Mass. Maritime with a 2-1 victory. The Buccaneers are now 16-14, 9-5 while the Vikings move to 14-12, 7-7 in the season.
Brock Pare (Lowell) pitched 7.2 innings for Salem State in game one, allowing only five hits and one earned run. He struck out a total of nine hitters and issued two walks. Pare ultimately earned a no-decision. Brenden Baiardi (Harwinton, Ct.) managed to record his fourth save of the season. Matt Walling (Plantsville, Conn.) suffered the loss after giving up one earned run in just 0.1 innings.
Kyle Banche (Torrington, Conn.) put in a solid effort, in the second game. Banche pitched five innings, allowing only five hits and one earned run. Nick Bamforth (Stoneham) pitched a scoreless sixth to earn the win. Jake Boucher (Wallingford, Conn.) recorded his third save of the season.
Game One
- By the time the fifth inning came around both teams were still scoreless, The Buccaneers found themselves in a promising situation with runners at the corners and two outs. However, Tucker Leslie (Mashpee, Mass.) was caught attempting to steal, resulting in a rundown for the final out of the inning.
- During the bottom of the inning Aiden Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) and Dylan Adamson (Lunenberg) managed to hit back-to-back singles. With two out Mark Smith (East Haven, Conn.) was intentionally walked, to load the bases setting the stage for a potential game-changing moment. Boucher unfortunately was unable to deliver as he grounded into a double play that ended the inning.
- The game was scoreless until the eighth when Pare was lifted with two outs in the eighth with a runner at first. Pietrafesa blasted a two-run bomb to left field, which was the difference in the game.
Game Two
- The game between remained scoreless for the first two innings, but in the third inning, Michael Estrada (Covington, LA) hit a single to the left field, bringing home the first run of the game, allowing Jake Houston (Bellingham, Mass.) to score from third. The Vikings managed to even up the scoring during the bottom half of the inning, thanks to Edward Field‘s (Gloucester,) double to left center field. Lynch then reached base on an error. Two batters later, Smith hit a sacrifice fly to the right fielder, allowing Field to score from third.
- Belgrove proved to be the hero as he scored the go-ahead run in the sixth to put his team ahead. With two outs and two runners on base, Belgrove hit a well-placed single to center field, bringing in the go-ahead run to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead.
NOTEWORTHY
- Pare pitched 7.2 innings and had nine strikeouts, which was his longest outing and his season-high in strikeouts.
- James Dolan (Rockland, Mass,), Owen Duggan (Billerica, Mass.), Lynch, and Adamson contributed with a base hit each in the first game.
- Michael Logiudice (Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded a multi-hit game in the first game of the doubleheader.
- Smith in the second game stole his 20th base of the season. He is 20 for 22 in stolen base attempts.
