City of Gloucester – No Parking – Dale Avenue – Sidewalk Construction On Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26, 2024, the contractor for the City of Gloucester will begin to prep for sidewalk and curbing construction on Dale Avenue from Prospect Street to Warren Street. There will be no parking on Dale Avenue between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday and Tuesday so the contractor can complete the work in a timely manner.
This work is weather dependent. We recognize the inconvenience to neighbors and motorists and will take all steps necessary to minimize the disruption. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Department of Public Works at 978-281-9785.
Fund Will Honor Three Residents Who Died in January
NAHANT – The Town of Nahant and Nahant Fire Department and American Legion Post 215 have launched a donation fund to support creation of a detector replacement program in memory of three residents who died unexpectedly in January.
The Benson Fund will honor three members of the Benson family who died unexpectedly on Jan. 8. Elevated carbon monoxide levels were found in the home. The program was announced at the Board of Selectmen’s meeting on Wednesday, March 20, beginning the Get Alarmed Nahant initiative.
During the initial planning for Get Alarmed Nahant, American Legion Post 215 immediately committed $2,000 to recognize a Benson family member who served in the Armed Forces.
“The loss of the Benson family is not only a tragedy. At Nahant American Legion Post 215 we see it as a call to action,” Post 215 Commander Dan McMackin said.
“In collaboration with Nahant Fire Department and the Board of Selectmen, we want every Nahanter to be safe from carbon monoxide, the silent killer. This group will provide and install carbon monoxide detectors, at no cost, to any Nahanter who requests one. John Benson was a veteran who served his county. Now his memory can serve his community.”
The Town intends to match the American Legion donation with $2,000 from the American Recovery Plan Act.
“The deaths of three Benson family members deeply affected the town,” said Mark Cullinan, Chair of the Board of Selectmen. “The fund is a great way to turn this tragedy into a positive and improve fire safety for our residents. On behalf of the town, thank you to the American Legion and Commander McMackin for stepping up and becoming important partners in this effort.”
The program is intended to assist vulnerable populations, such as seniors or those who may not be able to afford new detectors, though any resident may apply.
The Fire Department also will partner with the American Red Cross, which will provide battery-operated smoke detectors, a limited number of carbon monoxide detectors, and fire safety pamphlets.

The Town and the Fire Department will be pursuing additional outside funding to expand access to the program.

WENHAM, Mass.- Yabdriel Gonzalez (New Haven, Conn.) went 4 for 4 with two extra base hits and one run batted in as Salem State extended their winning streak to six straight with an 8-4 victory over rival Gordon College. The Vikings improve their record to 7-3 while the Fighting Scots drop to 3-12.
Pitcher Jake Usenia (Uxbridge, Mass.) put on a solid performance to lead Salem State to victory. Usenia pitched 5.2 innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs, out of which two were earned. Colby Galipeau (Charlotte, Vt.), who came on in relief for Gordon College, pitched only an inning, allowing three hits, four runs, and three earned runs in the loss.
How Did It Happen?
- In the first, Gonzalez hit a pop up towards the pitcher. None of the three infielders near the pitching mound were able to catch it, resulting in a double for Gonzalez. The very next batter, Mark Smith (East Haven, Conn.), took advantage of the situation and hit an opposite field base hit, scoring the first run of the game.
- The Fighting Scots came back in the bottom of the first as CJ Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) delivered a home run to left center field.
- Salem State had runners placed on the corners with James Dolan (Rockland, Mass.) positioned at third base and TJ Beninati (Suffren, N.Y.) at first base. Aidan Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) came up to bat and delivered an opposite field base hit. Fortunately for the Vikings, a fielding error by the right fielder allowed Lynch to advance to third base while both Benianti and Dolan scored, resulting in a 3-1 score in favor of the Vikings. The momentum continued as the team was able to tally two more runs, culminating in a four-run second inning.
- In the bottom of the inning, the Fighting Scots made an impressive start with consecutive doubles from Robert Dunkle (Trumbull, Conn.) and AJ Figueroa (Wantagh, N.Y.). Later on in the inning, with two outs, Usenia managed to pick off Jonathan McIntyre (Carmel, N.Y.) at first base to bring the inning to an end.
- Usenia, showcased his skills retiring eight out of the final nine batters that he faced. His remarkable performance allowed him to pitch 5.2 innings and contribute significantly to his team’s success.
- Lynch hit a solo shot in the eighth to left center field to extend the Vikings’ lead 6-3. Salem State wasn’t done yet when Owen Duggan (Billerica, Mass.) stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a two-run single to extend the Vikings’ lead.

- Gonzalez and Lynch went a combined 6 for 8 with three extra base hits and three RBI.
- Demers went 2 for 5 with an RBI and two extra base hits with a double and a home run for the Fighting Scots.
- Kevin Whalen (Lynn, Mass.) was the starting pitcher for Gordon and pitched an inning, giving up two hits, and one run.
- Gordon College opened each inning with a new pitcher.
