College Sports Notebook
Endicott women’s basketball junior forward Sarah Dempsey (Windham, N.H.) and freshman guard Emma Shinney (Wakefield) have received Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Co-Player and Rookie of the Week awards, respectively, as announced by the league office on Monday.
On the week, Dempsey averaged 30 points per game and shot 75% from the field (24-for-32) to lead the Gulls to a 2-0 week in conference play. In Wednesday’s 101-74 win at Nichols, the junior forward recorded a program-record 39 points, passing the previous mark of 37 set by herself and Tara Laugeni ’23 (Woodbridge, Conn.) (2/02/22 | 1/12/22).Dempsey went 16-for-19 from the field (84.2%, 7-7 FT), pulled down a season-high-tying 15 rebounds, dished out five assists, and registered one block in the blowout win. Her 39-point effort also marks the fifth-highest scoring output by an NCAA D3 women’s basketball student-athlete this season without attempting a 3-point field goal. She added 21 more points to her stat line on Saturday in a wire-to-wire win over Hartford, 89-61. She shot 8-of-13 from the field (61.5%, 1-2 3PT, 4-4 FT) and compiled six rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a pair of blocks in the second lopsided victory of the week for the Gulls.
Shinney accompanied Dempsey with impressive stat lines in those two games, as she averaged 14.5 points per game (64.7 FG%), 9 assists (1.6 A/TO), 8.5 rebounds, and 3.5 steals in Endicott’s 2-0 conference week. Against Nichols on Wednesday, the freshman guard notched 13 points (6-8 FG, 75%, 1-2 FT), 11 rebounds, nine assists, one steal, and three blocks, finishing just an assist shy of the program’s first ever triple-double. She followed up that performance against Hartford on Saturday with 16 points, six boards, nine more assists, a career-high six steals, and two rejections. This marks Dempsey’s sixth career CCC Player of the Week award (1/24/22, 1/17/23, 11/27/23, 1/2/24, 1/8/24), and Shinney’s fourth career CCC Rookie of the Week award (12/11/23, 1/2/24, 1/8/24).
