Friday afternoon Update A Byfield man has been identified as the victim in an apparent drowning that occurred in the Town on Thursday, Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker and Newbury Police Chief Patty Fisher announced.

Witnesses observed a man entangled in brush in the Parker River, in the area of Forest and River streets and alerted authorities. One of the bystanders attempted to enter the river to reach the man but was unable to do so due to the rapid-moving current.  With the assistance of multiple state and local agencies and resources, authorities were able to recover the man late Thursday evening and have identified him as 54-year-old David Harwood of Byfield.

The incident remains under investigation by the Newbury Police Department and members of the Essex County District Attorney’s Office State Police Detective Unit, but foul play is not suspected at this time.

Weather – Sunshine with temps today in the mid 40s. Heavy rain moves in overnight with some strong winds. There are some coastal flooding concerns for tomorrow morning and there is a hightide around noon on Saturday.
