Manchester Essex Regional High School Student Works to Reduce Social Isolation Among Seniors

MANCHESTER-ESSEX – Superintendent Pam Beaudoin and Principal Julie Sgroi wish to spotlight a Manchester Essex Regional High School student who is working to help the senior population with loneliness.

Junior Jack Cummins created the “iconnect2U” program, and has regularly visited Blueberry Hill  Rehabilitation in Beverly, Medford Rehabilitation in Medford, Brentwood Rehabilitation in Danvers, and the memory care unit at The Residences at Riverbend in Ipswich for the past two years. Cummins meets with several senior residents during each visit, and learns more about them to create an individualized poster which highlights special moments in their life.

The posters are often displayed in the seniors’ room, providing a conversation starter between residents, caregivers, staff, and guests. Posters also help patients remember important moments and highlights in their lives.\

Cummins recently shared his project with students in his French 4 Honors class. He hopes to encourage other senior living centers to take part.

Cummins’ efforts align with the District’s Vision of a Graduate, which encourages self-awareness, empathy, critical thinking, and global citizenship.

“Jack has made an immeasurable difference in the lives of so many seniors, and shows the impact that our Vision of a Graduate can have in our communities,” Principal Sgroi said. “It will be exciting to watch what Jack will accomplish.”
