The Hamilton-Wenham volleyball team went on the road to upset CAL opponent Essex Tech 3-2 (25-23, 25-12, 22-25, 20-25, 15-7). The Generals closed out a competitive first set with an ace, and then continued their great serving in the second set, building a 12-0 lead with junior Ava Day (4 aces, 4 digs, 1 assist) at the service line. After fighting through a couple of rough patches in the 3rd & 4th sets, the Generals took back full control in the 5th, leading from start to finish and controlling every facet of the game.
Hamilton-Wenham’s offense was led by seniors Gaby Campbell (18 kills, 4 aces, 2 digs, 1 block assist) and Maddie Wilson (13 kills, 6 aces, 9 digs, 1 block), while senior setter Hannah Ciriello executed a flawless game plan and finished the evening with 30 assists, 1 kill, and 1 block assist.
The Generals avenged a first game of the season tie in which they put a lot of shots towards the goal, but couldn’t put any away. Today, junior midfielder Annie Moynihan took care of the scoring. In the 9th minute, she took a pass from junior defender Maddy Wood and buried it for the 1-0 lead. Moynihan secured the win and gave the Generals a little breathing room in the 73rd minute, when she finished a shot inside the box on a pass from sophomore midfielder Savannah Gauron.
The Generals defense held strong today for the shutout. Seniors Claire Veenema and Leah Coffey, along with Wood and sophomore Evie Bernard cleaned up all of the ME chances. Behind them senior goalie Stewart Bernard only needed to make 3 saves, but one was a fantastic dive to her right that looked like it was a certain goal. Bernard earned her sixth shutout of the season.
The Generals are 7-0-1 and face Georgetown on the road on Friday.
