GLOUCESTER – The Gloucester Fishermen improved to 2-0 with a 17-8 win over the Weston Wildcats at Newell Stadium Friday night. Jaylen Severino scored the game’s first touchdown with a 5 yard sweep to the right at 8:51 of the first quarter that finished off a 7 play, 51 yard drive. Cameron Widtfeldt added the PAT for a 7-0 Fishermen lead.
After being held to -12 yards in the first quarter, the Wildcats put together a quick 3 play drive covering 66 yards that finished with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Cort to Johah Backer. Emilio Tanzi put the Wildcats in position for a score with a 59-yard scamper on the series’ second play. The TD came with 5:01 left in the first half. Following the 2-point conversion, Weston took an 8-7 lead.
Gloucester, in turn, put together a 12-play, 51 yard drive that ended with a 20 yard field goal by Wedfeldt that gave a Gloucester 1 10-8 lead with 6 seconds left in the half.
Neither team could muster any offense in the third quarter.
In the 4th, Widfeldt put the game out of reach when he finished off a 14-play, 73-yard drive with a 9 yard QB keeper to the right with 7:38 left to go in the game. He again added the PAT and it was 17-8, Fishermen.
Gloucester senior running back Kayden Souza led all rushers with 25 carries and 117 yards gained.
Gloucester outgained Weston, 235 yards to 154
