Newburyport Police & Swat Team Serve Warrants – Details on Tuesday’s Incident

NEWBURYPORT – City Marshal Mark Murray reports that the Newburyport Police Department was assisted by the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) SWAT Team while serving multiple arrest warrants.

On Tuesday, Aug. 22, at approximately 5 p.m., the Newburyport Police Department was notified that NICHOLAS HANSON, AGE 40, OF NEWBURYPORT, who was wanted on multiple arrest warrants, was in his apartment at 234 Low St., along with FRANCESCA FERRARA, AGE 33, OF NEWBURYPORT, who was also wanted on an arrest warrant.

Newburyport Police officers were unable to make contact with HANSON and FERRARA, despite seeing evidence that they were inside the apartment.

HANSON has resisted arrest in the past. Newburyport Police setup a perimeter around the apartment and requested assistance from the NEMLEC SWAT Team, which includes specially trained officers and a negotiator.

Members of the NEMLEC SWAT team eventually took HANSON and FERRARA into custody without further incident. There were no reported injuries.

“We would like to thank the NEMLEC SWAT team for resolving this situation peacefully,” Marshal Murray said. “We were also grateful that officers were able to de-escalate the situation and affect the arrests without anyone getting hurt or injured. A job well done by all officers involved.”

HANSON was ordered held without bail at his initial appearance in Newburyport District Court. FERRARA was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear Wednesday in Lawrence District Court.
