Friday, 7/28 – Person Struck and Killed by Train in Andover (Story Update w/ ID) – Gloucester Fishing Industry to be Recognized – Local Photos

Friday Afternoon Update: The person struck and killed by a train in Andover on Thursday has been identified, Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker announced.

Zhongli Zhang, 85, of Railroad Street, Andover, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities were notified about 4:30 p.m. that a person had been struck near 10 Railroad Street, near the intersection of Railroad and Essex streets.

Upon further investigation, they learned Zhang – traveling on foot – had apparently waited for a southbound train to pass before being struck by a northbound Amtrak Downeaster train that was passing through Andover immediately after the southbound train cleared the intersection.

From initial analysis, the crossing lights and gates appeared to be working for both trains and still in the downward position when Zhang was struck.

The incident remains under investigation by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office State Police Detective Unit, Amtrak Police, MBTA Transit Police and Andover Police Department.

Weather – Sunny today with temperatures to the upper 80s to 90.

Mass Public HealthThis summer, when swimming in lakes, ponds, and other natural bodies of water, be aware of tree limbs, rocks or other obstacles and steep drop-offs that can take you by surprise. More safety tips can be found at mass.gov/SwimSafe

What’s hiding under the surface? Hidden dangers can be deadly, even for experienced swimmers. Steep drop-offs can take you by surprise. Invisible currents that can sweep you away or tire you out. More distance to reach that island than you think. Cold water that can shock your system & impair your ability to react. Tree limbs, plants, rocks & other obstacles that you can get stuck on. Danvers DPW – Starting July 31, water main construction will begin on Locust St (from Betsy’s Way to Worthington Ave). During this project, detours may be in place directing traffic toward Popular and Wenham Streets. Motorists should plan for delays and detours in the area after work starts.
