Gloucester Fire Department Offers Fire Pit and Chiminey Safety Tips Ahead of Summer

GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith and the Gloucester Fire Department would like to share fire pit and chiminea safety tips ahead of summer.
The Gloucester Fire Department allows outdoor burning through chimineas and fire pits without a permit if the following conditions are met, according to the Town of Gloucester Ordnances:
  • The fire and/or smoke does not pose any hazard to property.
  • The smoke does not create a health hazard or nuisance to surrounding residents.
  • A fire extinguisher, working hose or additional water supply is in the vicinity of the fire pit or chimineato easily extinguish flames if necessary.
  • Only use firewood when using a fire pit or chiminea. Leaves, debris, household trash or hazardous waste are prohibited from burning.
  • Keep the fire at least 25 feet away from any structure or combustible material.
  • The fire pit or chiminea should be positioned on a level non-combustible surface.
  • The fire is constantly attended by a competent adult, until the fire is fully extinguished.
  • When igniting a fire, flammable liquids are prohibited.
  • Check your daily weather conditions for burning restrictions, including high winds or high temperatures.
The Gloucester Fire Department may order any outside fire to be extinguished due to a complaint or a hazardous condition.
The Gloucester Fire Department would like to share the following tips from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and the National Fire Protection Association:
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher, working hose, or additional water supply near the fire pit or chiminea.
  • Closelymonitor children when a fire pit is in use.
  • Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving your backyard or other area.
  • Only burn clean and dry firewood.
  • Make sure the fire is kept to a reasonable size, less than 3 feet in diameter.
  • In case of emergency call 911.
