Salem Police Report – On Saturday, April 29th, at approximately 7:39 p.m. Salem Police units were dispatched to the Wendy’s Restaurant located at 91 Lafayette Street in response to a 9-1-1 call alleging that an individual was in the bathroom with a weapon, specifically an AK-47 rifle. Responding units secured and searched the restaurant, however, no weapons or suspects were located.
City of Beverly
The Hall-Whitaker Bridge which connects Ryal Side to Downtown via Bridge Street over the Bass River is now permanently closed per Massachusetts Department of Transportation. It will continue to stay open for pedestrian, bicycle and marine access at this time.
The Kernwood Bridge is open for all traffic.

UPDATES
May 1, 2023: The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has provided the City with the following update on the current status of the Hall Whitaker Bridge project:
- The 25% Highway/Temporary Bridge Sketch plans were submitted on schedule (this spring, as MassDOT committed to at the meeting last fall) and are currently under review by MassDOT. The review and comment resolution will be completed in May.
After the review is completed and the plans are modified to reflect any changes, a Design Public Hearing can be held. This is currently being scheduled for late June.
- Utility coordination is ongoing
- Borings are being scheduled for June/July
- MassDOT continues to work with the United States Coast Guard and Bass Haven Yacht Club to collect data for the marina’s accommodation requirements in order to permit the temporary fixed bridge
Winthrop Police – 10-year-old Danielly Pinto seen in photo with members of the Winthrop Police Department started her own fundraiser idea last year with the help of mom she purchased some autism keychains and sold them to raise money during our fundraiser for Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism. She continued her idea this year raising over $400 by selling key chains and patches. Today, Danielly dropped the check off to us bringing our total to over $4000.00. Thank you to everyone who donated by buying a shirt and/or patch and thank you Danielly for once again showing how one person can make a difference.
