Hamilton Wenham Girls Lacrosse improved to 2-3 on the young season earlier today on the strength of a 10-8 win over league rival, Manchester-Essex.
The Generals answered Manchester’s opening goal with a streak of five consecutive points throughout the first half, interrupted by their opponent’s goal with nine seconds remaining, to close out the first half at 5-2. Manchester came out strong in the second half, and took the lead at 7-8 with 9 minutes remaining in the game.
Then, trailing by one with under 10:00 to play, freshman Grace Glidden scored three of her four goals for the Generals to seal the victory. Her final point was set up as she cut in toward goal on a beautiful pass by junior Stewart Bernard (3 shots, 1 goal) off of a free position with less than a minute left to play. Hamilton Wenham freshman Evelyn Bernard won the ensuing draw, and the home team was able to run out the clock.
Junior captain and goalie Ava Vatour had 11 saves, many from close range. Her six first half saves coupled with the suffocating defense of junior Ava Shultz and freshman Maddie Graber allowed the Generals to stay in control. Sophomore Maisie Leland (2 shots, 2 goals) and Evelyn Bernard (5 shots, 6 draw controls, 2 goals) paced the Hamilton Wenham offense early.
Senior captain Dylan Whitman (2 shots, 1 assist) and sophomore Avery Nistl (5 shots, 1 goal, 2 draw controls) all contributed to the General’s attack.
The Generals (2-3, 1-2 CAL) host Pentucket on Monday.
