NEWBURYPORT – Mayor’s Corner – In this episode of the Mayor’s Corner, Mayor Reardon begins by remembering the life of the legendary NHS football coach, Jim Stehlin, who passed away Wednesday morning. Coach Stehlin retired in 1983 after almost two decades of walking the sidelines. In 2015, the football field at NHS’ World War Memorial Stadium was named in his honor. He re-caps Clean Sweep and the official completion of the Plum Island Dredge project. The City Council unanimously approved the appointment of the new DPS Director, Wayne Amaral, on Monday night. The Fire Chief search continues to move forward and will hold its first round of interviews Friday. The advisory group for 59 Low Street (the proposed future home of NYS) received bids from architecture firms for the full design. The Mayor’s budget meetings with his Department Heads are complete.

NORTH READING — Fire Chief Don Stats reports that the North Reading Fire Department extinguished a working fire in a large shed on Chester Road on Wednesday afternoon.

On Wednesday, April 12, at approximately 4:30 p.m., North Reading Fire received multiple 911 calls reporting a structure fire at 11 Chester Road.

The duty crew consisting of Capt. Jon Burt and Firefighters Mike Tannian, Nick Carney and Chris Hadley were first to arrive on scene, and discovered heavy fire showing from a large shed.

Dry, windy weather led the National Weather Service to declare a red flag warning on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. Any fires that start may spread rapidly and become difficult to extinguish.
