GLOUCESTER – The City of Gloucester has received a $99,000 state grant to support remediation work at Haskell Pond Dam.
The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs is providing the grant through its Dam and Seawall Repair or Replacement Program, which aims to address failing dams, coastal infrastructure, and levees across the Commonwealth.
The Haskell Pond Dam supplies a significant percentage of the City’s water needs. The 43-foot-high Dam, located just north of Route 128 in West Gloucester, holds back 340 million gallons of water. The Dam was built in 1902. It is classified in poor condition by the state, though not considered in imminent danger of failure.
The City will use the $99,000 grant to support remediation work at the former shooting range near the Dam. Remediation is considered essential to competing for future state and federal grants for improving the Dam.
“Thank you to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs for funding this critical improvement to our City’s infrastructure,” Mayor Verga said. “Ensuring the Dam meets current dam safety standards is a high priority in protecting our residents and the City’s water supply
