Trio of Gulls Earn CCC Weekly Honors
Endicott football student-athletes Hector Johnson (Worcester, Mass.), Joe Tirrell (Franklin, Mass.), and Ryan Smith (Glastonbury, Conn.) have all earned Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) weekly awards, as announced by the league office earlier today.
Johnson was named the CCC Defensive Player of the Week, while Tirrell and Smith claimed Defensive Rookie of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week honors, respectively.
Last Saturday in the Gulls’ 43-0 victory against the University of New England (UNE), Johnson had no trouble getting into the Nor’easter backfield as he recorded 3.5 sacks for 21 yards and 4.5 tackles for a loss in total. Johnson had six tackles overall (four solo).
Tirrell also played a key role in the shutout with four stops in the contest, including three solo efforts. Tirrell was also influential in ways that do not show up on the stat sheet as his defensive coverage helped the Gulls earn their fourth shutout of the season, a single-season program record.
Rounding out the group was Smith who accounted for 11 points in the win. He was perfect in the kicking game, converting all five of his extra-point attempts as well as both of his field goal opportunities. He sent kicks of 34 and 36 yards through the uprights in the victory.
