NEWBURY — Chief Douglas Janvrin reports that the Newbury Fire Department responded after an airplane made a hard landing Wednesday morning at Plum Island Airport.
Rescuers responded to the privately-owned, public-use airport at 11:15 a.m. after receiving calls about a plane down on its nose on the runway. Upon arrival, firefighters determined that a 1949 Navion single piston airplane had made a hard landing at the airport and had come to a rest on the grass, nose down.
The pilot self-exited the plane and was evaluated by Newbury Fire Department EMS personnel. He refused medical treatment, and his name has not been released.
The Federal Aviation Authority was notified of the incident by the airport manager. Runway 10/28 remains closed pending removal of the aircraft. No ground personnel were injured.
The Newbury Police Department and Newburyport Police and Fire Departments also responded to the scene
Plum Island Airport has two runways, 10/28, an 2,105-foot asphalt runway, and 14/32, a 2,300-foot stretch of grass.
