From Salem Police Department: Arson at Satanic Temple, 64 Bridge Street, Salem
On Friday, 10 June 2022 at approximately 10:05 p.m. Salem Police received
numerous 9-1-1 calls of a building on fire at 64 Bridge Street, Salem, the Satanic
Temple. Upon arrival, officers discovered the front porch of the structure on fire.
Efforts by the responding officers to extinguish the flames with fire extinguishers
were unsuccessful. The building, which was occupied at the time, was evacuated
and the Salem Fire Department was able to contain and extinguish the blaze. The
Temple sustained damage to the front porch area; no injuries were reported.
Investigation determined that the fire had been deliberately set; an individual
was observed pouring a flammable liquid on the porch and setting it on fire.
Daniel Damien Lucey, age 42, of Chelsea, Massachusetts, was arrested without
incident at the scene. When interviewed, Lucey admitted to traveling to Salem for
the express purpose of setting fire to the Temple. Lucey made statements that he
considered his actions a “hate crime.”
Lucey remains in custody, charged with Arson of a Dwelling (MGL Ch. 266 §
1), Civil Rights Violations (MGL Ch. 265 § 37) and Destruction of a Place of
Worship (MGL 266 § 127A).

Salem, MA – Mayor Kimberley Driscoll today issued the statement below in response to last night’s arson at the Satanic Temple located in Salem.
“I am enormously grateful for the quick and professional response by the Salem Police and Fire departments to last night’s criminal arson attempt and share our community’s relief that no one was hurt in this awful incident. On behalf of the City of Salem, we condemn this hateful attack. Salem is a welcoming place, and the actions of this individual are not reflective of who we are or our values as a community.”
