Gloucester School Superintendent Recommends Fishermen Participate in Fall 1 Sports, Reversing Earlier NEC Decision

GLOUCESTER – Gloucester Superintendent of Schools Ben Lummis has recommended to the city’s school committee that the high school’s athletics teams be allowed to participate in sports this fall, joining a number of other area schools that will be playing. The School Committee has not yet made a final decision

After student-athletes from a number of area schools rallied in Danvers a week ago in support of reversing an earlier decision by NEC administrators to NOT play fall sports,  it appears that Gloucester will be joining Beverly, Salem, Masconomet and Peabody in playing fall sports (soccer, field hockey, golf, and cross-country).  According to Phil Stacey, sports editor of the Salem News, the Danvers School Committee will consider the Falcons’ options next Monday.

Mac Cerullo, sports editor of the Newburyport Daily News, tweeted Thursday that “The Rockport School Committee has tentatively approved fall sports by a vote of 5-0, contingent on the Board of Health signing off at its meeting tomorrow.  Barring any issues there, Rockport will become the fourth CAL school approved to compete this fall.”

In talking with MSO News Thursday, Superintendent Lummis updated the plans for re-opening schools next week.
