In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage (1920-2020), the Abbot Public Library and the League of Women Voters of Marblehead are presenting a free public event, featuring guest speaker Susan Zimet, on Wednesday March 4th at 7:00 pm, at the Abbot Public Library. Zimet is a unique combination of author and activist, a person who has dedicated her professional life to key public policy issues such as the environment and women’s rights. She wrote her first book, “Roses and Radicals: The Epic Story of How American Women Won the Right to Vote,” to provide a full picture of this effort, especially for young people.

In 1995, Zimet was the first woman elected to the position of Town Supervisor of New Paltz, New York. She held elected office for 18 years, through 2015, representing New Paltz as either its Town Supervisor or Ulster County Legislature. During this time, Zimet became a leading spokesperson and advocate for the issues she believes in, including women’s rights, property tax reform, protecting the environment and opposing hydro-fracking, and she helped found an organization called Frack Action.

Zimet decided that there was not enough attention being paid to the historic upcoming centennial anniversary of women’s suffrage and specifically the suffragists who had fought so hard to make holding such offices possible for women. With this in mind, and in partnership with the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, and the AAUW, Zimet founded 2020: Project Women, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating, celebrating, and promoting the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, granting women the right to vote. Through the work of 2020: Project Women, NY Senator Betty Little introduced legislation to form the NYS Suffrage Centennial Commission. Zimet now serves on this Commission.

Light refreshments, including 100th Anniversary cake, will  be served!

Please sign up, at the Library’s Main Desk or by calling 781-631-1481, to help us ensure we have cake for all attendees!
Copies of “Roses and Radicals,” provided by the Copper Dog Books, in Beverly, will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
