Gloucester Police Receive $10,500 Grant for Traffic Enforcement Program

GLOUCESTER —Chief Edward Conley is pleased to announce that the Gloucester Police Department has been awarded a grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s Office of Grants and Research.

The $10,500 grant will fund multiple high-visibility traffic enforcement initiatives in Gloucester this year, targeting violations including impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and seat belt usage. The department will take part in various campaigns throughout the year including “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click it or Ticket,” during which marked cruisers will patrol the city looking to address related violations and educate the public.

In Gloucester, speeding is of particular concern to police and residents alike due to narrow, highly trafficked residential roadways.

“Speeding is a significant problem on Gloucester’s narrow and congested streets, which poses a serious danger to motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians,” Chief Conley said. “We hope this initiative will remind drivers that speeding is not only hazardous to you and everyone around you, it is also illegal.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding killed 9,378 people in 2018.
