Town of Danvers: New Cubside Composting Program!

The Town of Danvers is excited to announce the launch of a new curbside food waste collection pilot program, making it easier than ever for residents to compost their food scraps at home.

This new program is developed in partnership with Black Earth Compost and is part of Danvers’ ongoing effort to reduce trash, lower disposal costs, and support long‑term sustainability goals. Participation in this program will be available to up to 1,000 Danvers households on a first‑come, first‑served basis. Residents who enroll will receive a free 13‑gallon compost cart and compostable liners, provided at no cost by the Town.

Participants will then subscribe directly with Black Earth Compost for curbside collection. Subscription fees are paid by residents, with weekly and every-other-week pickup options available based on household needs. The more households who sign up, the lower those subscription costs will become over time due to shared service efficiencies.

What Residents Can Expect:

  • Free starter kits and liners available
  • Convenient curbside pickup of food scraps
  • A simple way to make a meaningful environmental impact
  • Rolling enrollment throughout the year until the program reaches capacity

Why Compost?

In Massachusetts, over 20% of the average household’s trash is made up of food waste. When thrown away, this material increases disposal costs and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. By composting instead, residents can help turn these scraps into nutrient‑rich compost that supports healthier soils and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.

Participating in curbside composting helps reduce household trash, lower environmental impacts, support Danvers’ sustainability and waste‑reduction goals and keep valuable organic material out of landfills and incinerators.

Enroll today! Residents can enroll now by visiting Black Earth Compost’s website at blackearthcompost.com/composting-in/danvers. After signing up, participants will receive information from Black Earth on how to pick up or receive their free starter kit.

The Town of Danvers is proud to offer this new program and looks forward to helping residents take an easy, impactful step toward a cleaner, greener community.
