Georgetown 61, Ipswich 55
Ipswich gave defending D4 champion Georgetown all it could handle before the Royals held on for a 61-55 at Doug Woodworth Court in Friday evening’s season-opener both teams.
Trailing 35-21 at halftime, Ipswich chipped away, narrowing the deficit to 7 at the end of the third quarter. Trailing by four late in the game, the Tigers finally caught up after Rex Satter hit a three and Trevor Manning converted a free throw to knot the game at 55 with just over a minute remaining. Ipswich had two chances to take the lead but could not convert and Georgetown’s Brendan Loewen hit four key free throws down the stretch to help the Royals escape with the win.
Satter led all scorers with 14 points, including 10 in the second half, and added five assists and 4 rebounds. Senior Vin Winter hit a trio of threes to finish with 11 and had four dimes as well. Manning, Cal Schofield and Anderson Pillis scored seven apiece for the Tigers, who had lost to the Royals by a combined 39 points in last season’s two matchups.
Irvin Zapata led Georgetown with 13, including three three-pointers in the first half to help stake the Royals to a big lead. Loewen added nine, including a perfect 6-6 from the line in the fourth quarter.
